7/6 Baez promoted to Smokies

Javier Baez promoted to Double-A Tennessee after Friday’s game. The shortstop batted .274 at Class A Daytona, and led the Florida State League with 17 home runs and 59 runs scored. The first-round pick in 2011 was second in total bases, fourth in RBIs (57), fifth in slugging percentage (.535) and sixth in hits (82).

He was named the Cubs’ Minor League Player of the Month for June after batting .300 with nine home runs and 28 RBIs. That included a four-homer game June 10 against Fort Myers.

* Second-round pick Rob Zastryzny was added to Class A Boise’s roster. 10th-round pick Zack Godley also will join the Hawks along with Dae-Eun Rhee, who had been on a rehab assignment. Outfielder Jacob Hannemann and pitcher Carlos Martinez were each placed on the seven-day DL.

great news! Hopefully he can keep progressing… really made some big strides the last month or two…
