7/18 Lake to join Cubs

The Cubs were expected to promote infielder/outfielder Junior Lake to the big league team on Friday to take the roster spot of outfielder Brian Bogusevic, expected to go on the disabled list after he re-aggravated his hamstring in the first half finale. Lake, 23, was batting .295 at Triple-A Iowa with four home runs, 10 doubles, two triples, 18 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases. Ranked ninth on MLB.com’s top 20 Cubs prospects list, Lake was slowed this season by a back injury, and did not join Iowa until June 6. This was his first year at the Triple-A level.

Bogusevic, 29, was batting .261 in 13 games with the Cubs. He felt tightness in his left hamstring July 4, and did not go on the disabled list at that time, but did not start until July 11. On Sunday at Wrigley Field against the Cardinals, he aggravated his leg chasing a ball, and came out of the game.

Lake’s promotion could be brief. Outfielder David DeJesus (sprained right shoulder) is working out in Mesa, Ariz., and could play in Rookie League games this week. If all goes well, he could be activated from the disabled list next week.

The Cubs are a little thin in the Minor Leagues in terms of outfield options. Ryan Sweeney is on the disabled list with fractured ribs. Outfielder Brett Jackson, on the Iowa team’s disabled list with a calf injury, also was working out in Mesa. The Cubs recently claimed outfielder Cole Gillespie off waivers from the Giants.

Junior Lake might be here longer than others might think….Valbuena trade in the making with Atlanta?

Yep….thinking the same thing. Plus, what if Lake actually PLAYS WELL? Oh my!

Lake could possibly be the swing man of the year. Hopefully many years. “Freakish athletic ability doesn’t always =baseball ability,BUT! Maybe once our beloved catch a break. Junior has the stuff but is he a Jeff Baker type or the next great also ran

Very nice to see… he has put in his time and now he gets a shot… really look to see him take on a derosa role on this team … has a cannon arm but below average defense… could have average to slightly above average bat… time will tell… hope he gets 200 abs by the end of the season

He may be a surprise petrey, at least will will bring some fresh energy to the field.

Gosh, in AAA since ONLY June 6th??? That’s less than two months in AAA….about 40 games, 156 AB’s…I sure hope they are not RUSHING the 23 year old, of course there is a NEED to fill on the ML club, imagine that…..why this could open the doors for MORE minor leaguers with little to no AAA experience to face the unthinkable….A PROMOTION. He may make us forget about Brent “The Experienced” Lillibridge!
Come on Junior! Show us something we’ve been waiting for….a spark. Good luck to the kid, I hope he puts a lot of pressure on the FO to keep him on the ML roster.
