8/4 Dodgers 1, Cubs 0

Carlos Villanueva dropped his fourth straight loss despite posting his seventh quality start in Sunday’s 1-0 Cubs loss to the Dodgers. Villanueva is winless in his last 11 starts.

* Logan Watkins (1-for-4) recorded his first Major League hit with a sixth-inning single to left field. With Watkins making his ML debut and Donnie Murphy (0-for-2, BB) making his Cubs debut, the Cubs have utilized 48 players this season, five shy of the franchise record 53 players who appeared last year.

* The Cubs were shut out for the second consecutive game and eighth time this season. They have been blanked in back to back games for the first time since Oct. 1-2, 2012, vs. the Astros.

* With the loss, the Cubs are 15-24 in one-run games and finished the eight-game homestand, 1-7.

* The Cubs had opportunities. They out-hit the Dodgers in two of the games and in the total series, 34-33, including 7-2 on Sunday. They were outscored, 16-6, in the four games, and left 30 runners in base, going 5-for-27 with runners in scoring position.

We play better on road than at home, along with Kansas City and another club. Something is very wrong about this picture. It is upside down.

Lots of problems with the Cubs……..lots of good things happening also……..future looks bright…..better than what we see on the South Side……….one more big summer sell off next year…….then Dale, Theo & Jed plus all the Cubs players will have to “produce” or the fans will turn………..earliest playoff scenario for the Cubs is 2016 as a wild card team….if there is not a tie or two by the end of 2020, then this rebuilding process is another Cubs failure.

Don`t know what you mean “a tie or two by end of 2020?” Does it mean “if we are not competitive by 2020?” We fans are going to insist on being relevant long before that, I can assure you. If we are not relevant by 2016, there is going to be consternation for sure.

typo on words. missed letters…..should have read….if there is not a title or two by 2020, then this rebuilding process is a failure”

Is there any information on the Major League, National League, and Cubs records for most hits in a game for a team scoring two or fewer runs? I wonder how close the Cubs came to that record with Friday’s 2-run, 14-hit performance.

A weekend playing against the “big boys”…….how did that work out? I used this weekend as a measuring stick to somewhat gauge where the Cubs are at. Thursday night was an exciting game, but the balance of the weekend certainly shows that we have a long way to go – both the players and the manager.

When the Cubs swept the World Champs in San Fran, was that an honest gauge also to judge on?………yes, the Cubs do have more work to do…….but we are in better shape than where we were at two years ago.

Looking ahead for 2014 & the Future…..

Position by position….

Catcher…do anyone of you feel Castillo is top level catcher?….what about mid-level?…..what about as a back-up?…….Cubs should improve in the catching dept. on the next few drafts…….Castillo could be like Geo Soto in another year or so…..Navarro is a great surprise…..Theo should resign him, but I feel his price will go up after this season numbers………this might give Koyie HIll hope of hearing his phone ring with Theo on the other end……………

First Base……Rizzo was Theo & Jed’s guy……..will Rizzo be better than a Mark Grace?……….will Rizzo hit for more power?……what if Rizzo is still struggling in 2015 & 2016?……..at least we have Plan “B: in the minors with Vogelbach or a Canderlario who could show some power and play first………look for more intense workouts at first for these two to happen during the winter…….

Second Base…….Alcantara seems to be the future……meanwhile Barney is on his last leg in Chicago, trade chip later on …..maybe in a package deal for pitching………….Wilkens will be a infield backup…….

Short Stop…….Castro or Baez?………will one be traded?…..and please don’t say for David Price…….this is like saying the Bulls have a chance to get LeBron James….David Price will not sign with the Cubs……..My guess is Castro will get traded if he does not improve his fielding and his mental toughness by 2015…….and Baez will be too big to play short……….but will play at Third Base…….

Third Base………Olt, Bryant, Vitters or Baez?………….comes down to guys who have eye problems, defense problems, hitting problems or “what is his true position” problem!………..I put my money on C. Villanueva to take over this spot…….I think Villanueva has all the tools and can become a major star……..I am going for the “underdog”

Outfield………Lake, Sweeney, Schierholtz, DeJesus, and other waiver rejects for now……future will look like Soler, Almora, Bryant roaming out there by 2016…….unless BJax can show Theo something in the next year or so……but right now, BJax will be going down in Cubs history with the likes of F. Pie. C. Patterson, S. Thompson, and others who failed to live up their hype…………Look for both Lake & Szczur to roam the outfield in 2014…….that should be some fun………Cubs could have a nice speedy outfield if BJax, Lake & Szczur can all click together by next summer……….but they will get traded for a pitching prospects when Soler & Almora comes up…….as for the Vets, they will be gone in one last sell off next July……….we will all miss Kim DeJesus……..

Starting Pitching…….Second half of 2013 should be much better than what we saw in 2012……..only minor league starter ready to make the jump is Cabrera……..so 2014 starters will be Samradzija, Jackson, Wood, Villanueva, Rusin, Arietta & Cabrera…….anyone think we can get 60 wins out of this bunch?……less?….more?……..can S. Baker return?………..Johnson, Edwards, Blackburn, Hendricks & Underwood are still three years away…….or will Theo trade Samardzija for MLB ready starting pitching prospects by next July?…….this game is all about the pitching……..the Dodgers are showing it……..

Bullpen………..Vizcano should be ready…if not, then Theo got nothing for Maholm……….Parker, Strop, Russell should be the main guys……but Theo & Jed will search for more guys off the wire, free agency or through trades……watch for J. Chapman to comeback to form after his injury…….Theo & Jed will move players in & out from the waiver list to fill holes in the bullpen…….

2014 Roster might look like this…..

C – Castillo, Navarro
1B – Rizzo
2B – Alcantara, Wilkens
SS – Casrto
3B- Olt, Vitters
OF – Lake, DeJesus, Schierholtz, Sweeney, Szczur, BJax

SP – Samardzija, Jackson, Wood, Villanueva, Arietta

BP – Vizcanaio, Cabrera, Russell, Strop, Parker, Rusin

(1) catcher neither Castillo or Navarro are great defensive Catchers. Navvaro has been a very good back up catcher, but will he continue to be?? I do not see Castillo as a guy that will be a regular on a playoff team. Position needs upgrading badly by 2015.
(2) Rizzo in my opinion will be fine. His average is down, but then again he plays against all tough LH pitching, rarely getting a day off. This is also really only his 2nd year, Brief call up in 11, then half a year last year. 2nd years are often down years due to the sophmore jinx.
If you have read or heard anything about Vogelbach, you have heard of weight problems and defensive problems. His bat may be great, but he is far far away and hopefully gets traded sooner than later.
(3) Its possible, but I dont think we will see Alcantara in 2014. There is Lake, Baez that can play 2B, out of the 3 including Castro, whoever plays the best SS can have that position with one of the others playing 2B. Baez may get next year at AAA. on (your) guess of Castro getting traded, would not bother me a bit, if and when Alcantara is ready.
(4) For 2014, I like Olt. I also like your dark horse pick of Villaneuva taking over 3rd in 2015. As far as Vitters, he is to young to give up on, but he is injury prone and has not shown alot. Back up in 2014???
(5) Will Lake stick as a regular in the OF? I can see Scheirholtz in 2014. Will Szczur stick in 2014 or will he get a year at AAA? Depends on ST. Will DeJesus be around and why would I miss his wife?? I have not seen her play all year. I am thinking another OF FA will be added with a 1 or 2 year contract.
(6) Pitching there is no telling on the rotation for 2014. I am guessing Wood and Jackson. Then what? Trades and FA signings will dictate that.
(7) Your bullpen looks good with the exception of Rusin, he is a starter and needs the every 5th routine.
All of this is just opinion of course.

Any Cubs F/A signings will be for the short term…look for Pitchers that have medical history problems that Theo can turn around on next July…….yeah, same thing here on Catcher position……if N.L. can adapt the DH, Vogelbach is a keeper……you never have seen Mrs, DeJesus did you?…..David is one lucky guy……starting pitching is crowded for 2014…..and more has to come, so Rusin will make the team one way or another…..not much value on him now, but Rusin could be a late bloomer…….We will see Alcantara at second before we see Baez.

Since Maholm, Felder, Villanueva, Baker everyone knows to be looking for short term FA starting pitching contracts with or without a medical history.
I have heard no talk, rumors or gossip about the NL adapting a DH.
I dont care what Mrs DeJesus looks like. Thats a true LMAO.
Hopefully you are correct on Rusin being a late bloomer, although he is only 26, I think??
Alcantara before Baez, Spring Training 2014 will give a better opinion.

Cubs will sign a long term option or two this off season… cubs talk u continue to blabber non sense..
