8/6 Cubs add Neal to roster

The Cubs added outfielder Thomas Neal to the 25-man roster on Tuesday and optioned right-handed pitcher Eduardo Sanchez to Triple-A Iowa. Neal, who will wear uniform No. 54, will be available for the first game of a three-game set against the Phillies. Neal, 25, was claimed off waivers Monday from the Yankees. He batted .325 (86-for-265) with 17 doubles, two home runs and 29 RBI in 72 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre affiliate, turning in a .391 on-base percentage and a .411 slugging percentage, good for an .802 OPS.

He had his contract selected on June 14 and played in four games with the Yankees, batting .182 (2-for-11) in limited action. He was designated for assignment on Aug. 2.

Sanchez, 24, has no record and a 3.00 ERA (1 ER/3 IP) in three relief appearances for the Cubs. He was claimed off waivers from the Cardinals on May 21 and has combined to go 1-1 with one save and a 3.71 ERA (14 ER/34 IP) in 28 relief appearances between Triple-A Iowa and Triple-A Memphis.

The Cubs had been carrying an extra pitcher in the bullpen with Sanchez on the roster. With the addition of Neal, the Cubs now have five players on the bench, seven in the ‘pen.

Posted this before, but here it is again; I sure hope Neil gets some regular playing time to see what he can do. This might be one very good pick up.

Not getting my hopes up….

Me either now that I see hes not in the line up. Give him 10 games, see what he can do. He had some impressive Minor League stats.
