8/9 Smokies moves

Tennessee added pitcher Nick Struck to the roster, and Zac Rosscup was promoted to Triple-A Iowa. Struck, 23, comes to the Smokies from Iowa where he started the 2013 campaign. With the I-Cubs, he was 6-8 with a 6.17 ERA (75 ER/109 1/3 IP) in 22 appearances (20 starts). The right-hander is no stranger to East Tennessee, having spent parts of the 2011-12 seasons with the Smokies. Last season, Struck led the Southern League with 14 wins, which guided him to Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors. The Damascus, Ore. native was selected by the Cubs in the 39th round of the 2009 draft out of Mt. Hood (Ore.) Community College.

Rosscup, 25, was 2-1 with three saves and a 2.49 ERA (12 ER/43 1/3 IP) in 37 relief appearances for the Smokies this season. The Clackamas, Ore. native was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 28th round of the 2009 draft, then traded to the Cubs, along with RHP Matt Garza and OF Fernando Perez for RHP Chris Archer, C Robinson Chirinos, INF Hak-Ju Lee, OF Sam Fuld and OF Brandon Guyer.

Nick got Struck with a demotion.

The Cubs might be positioning Rosscup to make the club out of spring training next season. They’ll either have two lefties (him and Russell) out of their bullpen or maybe they’ll look to trade Russell this off-season. Heck, if they got three players for Sean Marshall a couple of years ago, they could probably get something decent for Russell too!
