10/26 Winter ball update

* Marcus Hatley picked up his third save on Friday, pitching for the Tomateros in the Mexican Winter League. The right-hander, who pitched for Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa last season, now has a 1.35 ERA in seven games in relief, giving up one earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. He’s got 10 strikeouts.

* Hector Rondon, the Cubs’ Rule 5 pick who compiled a 4.77 ERA in 45 games, has given up one hit while striking out three in two innings of relief for Leones del Caracas in the Venezuelan Winter League.

I recall it being said Rondon had a successful 2013 campaign. I do not see that. How is an era close to 5.00 acceptable? I recall in the middle of the season recommending Rondon be demoted to minors. What am I missing with this guy?

Rondon was a Rule 5 pick, meaning he had to stay on the 25-man roster all season or be returned to his original team. He did manage to stay on the roster the whole season, so the Cubs get to retain him for 2014. He’s young still, so you hope that his 4.77 ERA was a result of being in the Majors before he was ready and that he’ll get better next year. So if the Cubs’ main goal for Rondon was to keep him under team control, then it was a successful season for him! Plus he did finish the year strong (Post All-Star stats: 3.20 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, .209 BAA), so he does deserve a shot at winning one of the bullpen spots going into 2014.

Thanks for that intelligent explanation, Doug.
