11/14 AFL and winter league update

Arizona Fall League

Matt Loosen gave up two hits over two scoreless innings and Jorge Soler hit a double in a 3-2 win over Glendale on Wednesday in Arizona Fall League play. Albert Almora started and also had a hit. The Solar Sox play the final regular season game Thursday at Glendale and it’s a must-win if they want to get to the championship game.

Salt River rallied to win Wednesday with an 8-5 victory over Scottsdale, which means the Rafters trail Mesa by a half game in the East Division. To win the division, Salt River needs to beat Scottsdale on Thursday and for Mesa to lose to Glendale.

Winter League

* Junior Lake was 3-for-5 with a home run for Estrellas in a 5-4, 10-inning win over Aguilas.

* Daniel Bard had another rough outing. In his second game in relief for Caguas, he walked three of the four batters he faced, and all three scored. Caguas rallied for a 6-5, 13-inning win over Ponce.

Loosen gave up 3 walks in his 2 IP. That also was a must win for the Solar Sox, that may have been the reason for his 2 IP start.

Loosen threw a no-hitter at Daytona earlier this season. I know he’s not a top prospect, but he’s got some decent stuff and will be interesting to watch how he progresses next year and beyond. On another note, it has to be a good sign that multiple Cubs affiliates and Cubs players were/are in a position to make the playoffs in their leagues. Daytona won the FSL Championship, Tennessee was runner-up in the Southern League, and Boise was runner-up in the NW League. And while Mesa isn’t all-Cubs, Bryant, Almora, Soler, Beeler, Loosen, Rivero, and Lendy Castillo have been regulars and played a big part in the team’s success. The winning mentality is already showing itself in the minors and it’s only a matter of time until those players reach the big leagues.

Lendy Castillo has more work than most. One would think with his ML experience, he would be dominating. His ERA indicates he is, but his base on balls total says otherwise.
His WHIP is over 2 with a total of 12 walks in as many innings.

I didn’t say he was playing a positive big part! :) Still though, being on a winning team has to have some positive effect and if he can figure out how to pitch again, it might work out in the long run. I won’t be holding my breath though.

Agree, after the year in the ML, my hope was he would use that as a positive going forward. Don’t know what happened, he did serve some time on the DL during that year. I know we both hope he gets it together, a start would be getting the ball over the plate and not be scared somebody get a hit.
I think a lot of guys just don’t trust their stuff.

The Solar Sox won 9 to 3 today. Last time I went to a Fall game I ran into Dave Stewart, wonder who all will be at the Championship game?

Baez and Bryant are legit…. Exciting guys to watch
