3/16 Cubs split split-squad games

Travis Wood struck out eight over five innings in the Cubs’ 3-2 loss to the Indians Sunday at Cubs Park in Mesa. Luis Valbuena hit a RBI double in the sixth.

In Las Vegas, Chris Rusin gave up one hit over four innings and Donnie Murphy, Daniel Vogelbach and Arismendy Alcantara each hit solo home runs to lead the Cubs to a 6-3 win over the Mets. Two runs scored on a throwing error in the Chicago first, and Ryan Sweeney added a RBI single. Alcantara finished with three hits.

On Monday, the Cubs play split squad games for the third straight day. Half of the team will face the Angels at Cubs Park. Edwin Jackson gets the start in Mesa. The other half travels to Phoenix where James McDonald will start against the Athletics.

Big day for Rusin…..Travis Wood looked good even though BJax played a fly ball into a 2 run double…………we might get 72 wins out of this team.

Aloha CubsTalk- I thought our Cubbies looked good today as well and Wood really recovered after that first inning and kept them in the game. That is encouraging. They “ss” days can be challenging and the way the team has held up bodes well I believe for the future. Patience can be a hard thing especially when all the talk is about a “ws,” but as you pointed out if they are able to win more games than last year, possibly 72+, that really is an accomplishment. Mahalo!

IM DIE HARD Cub fan since 59. DO we have any good arms down in the minors?

Good? Yes great? No….. Cj Edwards is the closest thing we got to top of the rotation …. He has a nasty curveball with a fastball in the 92-94 area. He is skinny and needs to bulk up for durability. Vizcaino is a great talent if he can stay healthy this year but he is most likely a bullpen arm this year…. Nasty stuff and a 96-98 mph fastball is a great combination. TJS and setbacks need to stop for him to be of value. Pierce Johnson is the next in line but still a ways to go. He can make major strides this year with solid performances. I think you will see Kyle Kendrick’s this year. He is a quality back of rotation guy that can throw strikes with pinpoint accuracy only sits in 89-92 mph area with fastball so that puts him at disadvantage there. I like him though but don’t expect anymore than 4-5 rotation type of guy.

P. Johnson (2015), Edwards (2015), Vizcaino (2014), Ramirez (2014), Blackburn (2016), Underwood (2016)……and whoever we get in this years draft and pitching prospects in the Samardzija trade…………Cubs prospects Cashner & Archer are with other clubs now.
