3/17 Baez to start at 2B

Javier Baez will start at second base for the Cubs in their split-squad game at Phoenix against the Athletics on Monday. Baez last played second on a regular basis his freshman year in high school.

“I’m just ready for anything,” Baez said Monday. “I just want to play second. We’ll see how it goes today.”

He’ll be matched up with Darwin Barney, who will start at shortstop against the A’s.

“I’m pretty sure he’ll help me and tell me how to play it,” Baez said.

The Cubs’ top prospect, Baez has been working with infield coach Gary Jones early to learn the different angles needed. Baez was taking grounders at second on Sunday in Las Vegas.

In high school, Baez also played shortstop, catcher and center field. He probably won’t have to catch for the Cubs.

“I don’t think so either,” he said.

Shortstop…third base…second base….outfield………I hope Cubs FO don’t mess up this guys hitting abilities with all these various positions.

Guess I have missed something? When did he play 3B and OF?

I hope that no matter what Baez just does great period. He is so young and has so much skill that he is a great player all around. I hope he won’t do what others have done in the pass. Come to the MLB then just start to go down hill.
