3/18 If I had to pick Opening Day roster …

It’s March 18, and there’s still plenty of things that can happen in the final games but if I had to pick a 25-man Opening Day roster, here’s my guess for 24. I haven’t settled on the 25th man yet. Why Alberto Cabrera over Hector Rondon? Because Cabrera is out of options and has looked good this spring. You can discuss this amongst yourselves:

Rotation:
Samardzija
Wood
Jackson
Hammel
Rusin

Bullpen:
Veras
Russell
Wright
Strop
Parker
Cabrera
Villanueva

Position players:
Rizzo
Barney
Castro
Valbuena
Murphy
Bonifacio
Schierholtz
Lake
Sweeney
Ruggiano
Kottaras
Castillo
Plus 25th man

Aloha Carrie- I hope all is well in AZ. Do you think the 25th person could be Olt if he is able to “right his ship,” in regards to his shoulder? He seems to have such potential but this one thing, and important thing is holding him back. Thank you as always for the updates. Mahalo.

I’d say no, because they would want him to get at-bats.

Aloha Carrie- Good point. He has been limited there as well. I have not read what his contract with the team is but maybe if there is room and his diagnosis is promising he could be on one of the minor league teams and see how it goes? Again, thank you. Mahalo.

It would be nice to know if Olt has an arm injury or a tired arm? Every report that is given, Olt states he will be ready to play 3rd soon and will be ready for opening day.
What is the real problem? Will he be at first at AAA or will he be playing 3rd?

He had some tenderness in his throwing shoulder (right), and says it happens every spring. He did rehab this offseason and felt strong, but apparently it was sore and they have been careful. I’d expect him to open at Iowa at 3B

Gotta make Ryno the 25th man.

My 25 Roster…..

Samardzija
Wood
Hammel
Jackson

Veras
Strop
Russell
Wright
Cabrera
Rusin
Villanueva

Castillo
Rizzo
Barney
Castro
Valbuena
Lake
Sweeney
Schierholtz

Kottaras
Murphy
Ruggiano
Bonifacio
Kalish
Roberts

Both Parker & Rondon need to head to the minors to work out their problems……Theo cannot expose Cabrera to the waive wire………both Roberts & Kalish earned spots….Vizcaino would be one of the first pitchers to be called up……I do believe Bonifacio will be in the lineup often due to his speed……Cubs will start off with four starters until the end of April……..when Arietta is ready, he will move into that 5th spot……..Olt needs more bats, and the minors is just the place…..Olt will be a part of this lineup by May…….

Well that is my 25 man roster….and I am sticking to it…for now.

They surely won’t keep Olt on the 25 man unless hes the starter. Hes probably sent down for more at bats to start the season. His shoulder has limited his action this year at 3rd and probably is effecting his swing a little more than hes leading on. 3-5 weeks in the minors for some extra seasoning would be a safe bet.

Baez starts the season in the minors as well. IMO his call up this year will depend on quite a few things. One, Castro’s health and Olts performance. I feel Baez is our future 3rd base with Bryant being moved to the outfield. If Olt rakes in the minors gets called up and rakes with the big boys then Baez probably doesn’t get the call until much later in the season unless we lose middle infield starters or depth due to injury. IF Olt pans out look for our 2015 starting day infield as Rizzo, Baez, Castro and Olt. These 4 could play together for a quite a few years.

Bryant, Almora and Soler as a future outfield makes sense as well. Even if all of these 7 guys don’t pan out, there are more on the way.

Basically Baez and Bryant’s future positions with the major league club depends heavily on what Olt can bring to the table and I for one would LOVE for Olt to pan out.

If I had to pick it now, I would go along with Carrie, but add CubsTalk pick of Roberts. I would prefer Roberts at 3rd Base over the platoon of Valbuena/Murphy. Maybe Platoon Barney/Valbuena at 2B. However if you do that, where does that leave Bonifacio?
If you put Bonifacio in the OF, whose place does he take? Do you send Lake back down after his very poor showing to this point? If so, you have another roster spot to fill.
Too early to pick a 25 man roster at this point, at least for me.

Another bad week for Lake, and he might be on the bubble……as I said earlier, Theo will scout the waiver wire before the season starts……a trade can happen…..by time Spring Training 2015 comes around, Bryant, Soler, Baez, P Johnson all will be heading North .

I definately expect a trade or even two. There are to many infielders, if Olt does not make the opening day roster, I would go with: Rizzo, Castro, Roberts, Bonifacio, Murphy would be my backup at all positions and RH bat of the bench. Valbuena could platoon with Valbuena at 3rd against tough RH starting pitchers and LH bat off the bench.
The way Baker is hitting, I might carry 3 Catchers.
Braves, D-Backs and A’s are in need of starters. With Arrietta on the mend and Rusin to start the season in the #5 slot, I see some value for Villanueva, maybe Rusin, but more value for Samardizja (now)!
I hate to give up on anybody, but Barney I would not miss at all. I would like to see more of Coghlan, his speed and LH bat could be used off the bench or against tough RH pitching.

Cabrera has been a total shock to me out of the Bullpen. Excellent starter at AA last season, then promoted to AAA where he pitched out of the Bullpen and was a total Fail. Also pitched in Winter Ball out of the BP, once again, a total fail.
So it is very nice to see him doing well in ST and hope his success there continues.

Can I do my 25 man Roster for 2015 Cubs ?????

Just a few names that should be on this roster by then……

Arietta
Cabrera
Grimm
Hendricks
Parker
Ramirez
Rondon
Rosscup
Strop
Vizcaino
Wood
P Johnson

Bryant
Castillo
Alcantara
Olt
Rizzo
Watkins
Baez
Lake
Szczur
Soler

lol no…. just no……..

the cubs sent down thier best starting pitcher this spring; their best reliever; and several players wo could surely play in the majors. now you say send down olt …
why? I’m beginning to believe theo is paranoid that his “core 4″ won’t be any good.
we are surely looking at another 95 loss season with your line-up. your next
line will be “lets wait until 2018″ … what a joke.

Bill Hansen, Olt has not played 3rd yet this Spring because of some arm ailment.

Rub some “Icy Hot” on that arm & shoulder, and you are as good as new the next day.

Just seen a report where the Tigers are monitoring Schierholtz and Barney.

So is the NSA and 28 other ball clubs.

I am sure they are Cubs Talk, this reported on another site, states the reason: The Tigers had two major injuries this Spring. their starting SS and an OF.

I have a problem with the Tiger / Cubs report…….first as you said, it came from another web site…….if Carrie reported, Gonzalez from the Tribune, Tom U., or people at MLB.com reported it, okay, it might be truth to it……but when it came from Levine & Cubs Den people ……just pass it off as filling dead space on their web pages.

Besides, Cubs need Schierholtz hitting and Barney’s glove for the moment……come back with a proposed trade later in July.

Lots of teams look at Cubs players…and Theo looks at lots of players in other systems………Baseball Trade Rumors…….biggest part of baseball along with the bases loaded home run.

Well, thats one rumor I would love too see Management dig into. Sometimes you do just as well with someone as you do without them.

Right now, teams are looking at everybody.

As they always are. What Management would pass at a chance of improving their team at any time of the year?
I forget some of the givens are not really a given in the case of certain posters.

Cubs might see 50 players pass through their locker room at Wrigley this season.

Thats how many they had last year.
