5/8 Minor matters
It was a big day Wednesday for Chris Rusin and Kris Bryant.
Rusin became the first Triple-A Iowa pitcher to throw a no-hitter in 30 years in a 3-0 win over New Orleans on Wednesday. Rusin struck out three and walked two. It was the seventh Triple-A no-hitter in Iowa franchise history, and first since the club joined the Pacific Coast League in 1998. Rusin helped himself, hitting a two-run single in the second. It’s the first no-no by a Cubs Minor Leaguer since Eric Jokisch did so last Aug. 8. Javier Baez had three hits and Josh Vitters had two hits to back up Rusin.
Bryant hit two home runs and drove in six runs to lead Tennessee to a 12-1 win over Birmingham. Dae-Eun Rhee got the win, giving up one run on three hits over seven innings. Bryant was 3-for-4, and also hit a double. His eight homers lead the Southern League. Stephen Bruno had three hits and two RBIs. Arodys Vizcaino struck out two in one inning in his Smokies debut.
Rob Zastryzny gave up four runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings in Daytona’s 5-1 loss to Lakeland.
Yasiel Balaguert drove in his 22nd run of the season but it wasn’t enough as Kane County lost, 5-3, to Wisconsin. Jacob Rogers and David Bote each had two hits.
