7/6 Minor matters – Sunday’s games

Corey Black gave up one run over six innings, Jorge Soler hit a home run in his return from the disabled list, and Dustin Geiger drove in three runs with three hits to lead Tennessee to a 9-1 win over Birmingham Sunday. Soler connected in the sixth. He missed most of the first half while battling hamstring injuries in both legs. Sunday marked his first game back with the Smokies since May 15. Newly acquired shortstop Addison Russell went 0-for-5 in his first game with the Smokies.

I am not getting my hopes up, but I sure enjoy watching the progress of Corey Black. Soriano was released by the Yankees, but this young man the Cubs received for Soriano is a beast when he takes the mound.

He’s a little wild still, and I know you’ve said you don’t like pitchers who can’t find the plate, but that’s why you take your time with guys like him and hope he can get his command in order by the time he reaches the big leagues. If he can get his command in order, he could have the potential and the stuff to be a top of the rotation starter. I’d even take a middle of the rotation starter or a hard-throwing late-inning reliever at this point. MLB.com lists his ETA to the Majors at 2015, but I would have to think that’s late-2015 as opposed to Opening Day. Still, he’s one to keep an eye on.

He seems a little more wild than last year, but even last year he walked 55 in a 107 innings with a WHIP around 1.40 and 117 K’s.
This year the WHIP is a little better at about 1.30, but as you say, 44 walks in 76 IP is alot. With the K’s coming down to 75.
Maybe more time with Bosio will correct that next Spring. We all know Pitching is the key and they will not all make it for sure. But I sure enjoy looking at the STATS of Johnson, Black, Balckburn, Hendrick, Edwards, Vizcaino, Beeler, Jockich, Rhee, Loosen, Torrez, Skulina, Underwood, Tseng and Paniaqua.
Also looking forward to see how Maples will do after his recent set back and would love to hear what is going on with Barrett Loux.
