7/6 Russell, Soler join Smokies
Addison Russell, acquired by the Cubs via trade from the Athletics, has joined Double-A Tennessee. Russell, 20, has missed much of the first half of the season because of a strained hamstring. In 13 games with Double-A Midland, he batted .333 (16-for-48) with seven runs, three doubles, a triple, one home run and eight RBI. The infielder was selected by the Athletics as the eleventh overall selection in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of Pace High School in Pensacola, Florida.
In another move, outfielder Jorge Soler has been activated from the Disabled List. In seven games with the Smokies this year, the 22-year-old outfielder batted .333 clip (8-for-24) with four runs scored, seven doubles and seven RBI, and had a double in each of the first six games with the team.
In a corresponding move, outfielder Kevin Brown has been transferred to Class A Boise. The Cubs also announced infielder Jeudy Valdez has been released. In 58 games with the Smokies, he batted .225.
