7/30 Cubs to acquire Doubront

The Cubs made a significant addition to the pitching corp on Wednesday, acquiring left-hander Felix Doubront from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.
FOXSports.com’s Jon Morosi first reported the deal was close on Wednesday. With starter Jon Lester being scratched for Wednesday’s game because of his uncertain trade status, the Red Sox are already in a position to make a roster move so Brandon Workman could start against the Blue Jays.

The Cubs are in need of pitching. Doubront, 26, has appeared in 17 games for the Red Sox this season (10 starts) and has logged 59 1/3 innings. He’s 2-4 with a 6.07 ERA. He’ll be reunited in Chicago with Theo Epstein, who was Boston’s general manager when Doubront was signed in 2005, and is now the president of baseball operations.

Interesting acquisition. A change of leagues and scenery seemed to help Arrieta, so maybe the same will happen with Doubront? Will there be a spot for him in the rotation, the bullpen, or will he go to AAA and see what happens? And could he possibly push Wood or Wada for a spot in the 2015 rotation? A PTBNL after the Rule 5 Draft is probably not going to be anyone the Cubs consider a top prospect, so this seems like a low risk, possible high reward deal. And with the buzz surrounding a Bonifacio deal, they might not have to worry about clearing a spot on the 40-man either.

Sounds like we might be moving a pitcher or two ourselves!

If one of the lefties are traded, then maybe he’ll move into the bullpen to start his Cubs career. Although I thought I remembered hearing that one of the reasons why he wanted out in Boston is because he wants to be a starter. So if none of the Cubs starters get traded, then my guess would be he gets sent down to AAA and waits for his opportunity. Same thing happened with Arrieta when he first came over last season. And I still say no one is going to trade for Edwin Jackson, unless they either don’t own a TV or a computer or they’re trying to get fired.

I remember last year how Orioles fans laughed at us when we took Strop & Arietta off of their hands……………….they sure are regretting that trade now.,,,Doubront has a good track record…..just needs some tuning up.

Rusin got recalled.
