8/17 Cubs 2, Mets 1

* Jake Arrieta threw seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out nine in the Cubs’ win. Since June 3, he has given up more than three runs in one start, and compiled a 2.45 ERA in that stretch. What was working? His curve, which was his strikeout pitch on his first eight Ks.

* Starlin Castro hit a game-winning home run leading off the ninth. He has hit in 15 of his 16 games, and is batting .400 in that stretch. His home run was his first career go-ahead homer in the ninth or later.

“We’ve played a lot of extra inning games, and I just wanted to go out there and be aggressive,” Castro said.

He is now one homer shy of matching his career high of 14, set in 2012.

* Javier Baez drew two walks, his first since he was called up on Aug. 5.

* Matt Szczur made his Major League debut, pinch-running in the eighth. He grounded out in the ninth in his only plate appearance.
