Final: #Cubs 12, Tigers 3
One day after being shutout for the first time this season on the road, the Cubs scored a season-high 12 runs and posted a 12-3 victory over the Tigers on Wednesday. Chris Coghlan and Miguel Montero each hit three-run home runs in the victory and Anthony Rizzo added a two-run single. Montero finished with three hits. He was 1-for-19 on the road trip.
Jake Arrieta picked up the win, giving up three runs on eight hits over six innings.
“He was solid,” Montero said of Arrieta. “There was one bad pitch [to Yoenis Cespedes] that cost him three runs, but other than that, he threw the ball outstanding. I don’t think they looked too comfortable at the plate.”
The Cubs finished their lengthy road trip to Miami, Washington DC and Detroit with a 5-4 record.
“We accomplished a lot,” Arrieta said. “It’s a game by game situation for us. Regardless of the struggle or whether we end on a high note with a victory, we’re able to put it behind us and come out ready to play the next day and focus on the task at hand. That’s why we’re able to win against good teams. They’ve got a potent lineup who I was able to neutralize for the most part.”
And it appeared that most of the players had enough clean clothes for the trip home. Manager Joe Maddon even wore a red and blue seersucker jacket.
