Fowler, Russell homer to help #Cubs beat Cards
Dexter Fowler hit a leadoff home run and added a two-run double and Addison Russell belted a three-run homer to back Dan Haren in the Cubs’ 9-0 win over the Cardinals Monday at Busch Stadium. Haren posted his best outing since joining the Cubs, throwing seven shutout innings.
*Fowler hit his fifth home run this season and 14th of his career. He’s now hit a career-high 17 homers this season.
*Russell hit his third home run in his last four games.
*The game marked the Major League debut of Carl Edwards Jr., who entered in the eighth in relief, and walked the first batter he faced, but got the next to hit into a double play.
“I just want to help these guys win,” Edwards said. “I’m going to learn from these guys. I’m going to take it all in. You hever know what can happen. Like Joe said, I’m excited to be here, and with a great group of guys. To take a young guy like me under their wings is great. As soon as I got here, they told me, ‘We’re not going to lead you wrong. Just have fun, keep doing what you’re doing.’ That was the biggest thing I got today.”
*With the win and the Pirates’ loss to the Reds, the Cubs are two games behind Pittsburgh in the NL Wild Card standings.
“You’ve got to get the team in front of you first,” manager Joe Maddon said. “I’ve said from the beginning, our objective was to win the division. You’ve got to catch the group in front of you and move on to the next one. Let’s just play tomorrow like we played today.”
