#Cubs have 40-man roster decisions

Friday is the deadline for when Major League teams must decide which players they will add to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. Any player selected in the Rule 5 Draft is immediately added to his new team’s 40-man roster, and must be kept on the selecting team’s 25-man Major League roster for the entire season. The Rule 5 Draft will be held Dec. 10 at the end of the Winter Meetings.

These are the players on MLB.com’s top 30 Cubs prospects list who would need to be added to the 40-man to avoid being exposed to the Rule 5 Draft:

No. 7 RHP Pierce Johnson

No. 10 C Willson Contreras

No. 13 1B Dan Vogelbach

No. 19 RHP Corey Black

No. 20 3B Jeimer Candelario

No. 29 RHP Daury Torrez

Aloha Folks- well the good news is that there are currently 31 folks on the “40-man” roster so they have room for all these players that Carrie has listed. Some trades will probably make more room in the future too. Mahalo!

I see two I would add, no questions asked. Contreras and Candelario
Torrez is only 22, throws mid 90’s. He should be kept.
Johnson was terrible in the AFL this year, then his last two starts lights out. In my opinion, he must be added.
C Black showed nothing in the AFL and Vogelbach coming off an injury.
Even if they add all 6, that leaves 3 Roster spots for FA’s or other pickups. But if two more Roster spots are needed before or after a trade, I would go with Black & Vogelbach.
Three spots should be plenty?

Also the likelihood of a player being selected in the Rule 5 Draft has to be taken into account. Candelario only has 158 at bats at AA and Torrez hasn’t even reached AA yet. The chances of a team picking either player in the Rule 5 Draft and giving them one of their valuable 25-man roster spots for the entire 2016 season when they are obviously not even close to ready for the Majors yet is slim. That’s why most Rule 5 Draft picks are eventually returned to their old team. The players picked simply aren’t ready for the Majors and keeping them around puts too much strain on the other 24 players on the roster. I also would be careful to add just anyone to the 40-man. After all, if you have to remove them from the 40-man later, they will have to pass through waivers and then any team can claim them without the requirement that they stay on the 25-man all year or be returned. So I’d take my chances that Candelario and Torrez go undrafted and if they are then good luck to whatever team decides to burn 4% of their roster on a AA player. As for the rest, Johnson, Contrares & Vogelbach get added. Black is up in the air, as he didn’t have a great 2015, but could still get it together enough to give the Cubs some bullpen depth.

Agree with everything you said and enjoyed that post Doug, except Candalario.
I am not a professional Scout, but after seeing him in the AFL, there is no way I would risk losing him.
Torrez may be worth the gamble. After the Cubs picking up Acevedo and LH reliever Leathersich from the Mets, its going to be some hard decisions on who lays final claim in that 40th Roster spot.
