#Cubs tweak rotation for week

National League Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta will make his second spring start Monday against the Padres. Here are the pitching match ups for the rest of the week:

Monday vs Padres: RHP Jake Arrieta
Tuesday at Padres: LHP Clayton Richard (LHP Jon Lester to pitch Minor League game)
Wednesday at Royals: RHP John Lackey
Thursday vs D-backs: RHP Jason Hammel. (10 a.m. B Game at Talking Stick vs Rockies)

Why won’t Lester face the Padres? Manager Joe Maddon said they want the lefty to get his work done in a more controlled setting and they can give some other pitchers innings.

“You’d like to see some other guys against varsity competition,” Maddon said. “This way you can assure the fact that you can stretch [Lester] out comfortably. It wasn’t done to get work on anything like throwing to the bases, that wasn’t the motivation.”

Looking ahead, Arrieta’s start after Monday will be in a Minor League game next Saturday. Lester is not starting in a Minor League game to work on his fielding.

“It’s to shield him from other teams seeing him,” Maddon said. “You like to shield, and the other thing is to make sure the guy gets his work in more comfortably and you can stretch him out. I understand the question about Lester but that’s not the reason.”
