Victorino weighing options. #Cubs

Shane Victorino, who has been slowed this spring by a strained right calf, will not make the Cubs’ Opening Day roster and is considering whether he’ll rehab in Mesa and then play for the team’s Triple-A team. Victorino, 35, had signed a Minor League contract with the Cubs on Feb. 26. He played in four games, but has not seen any action since March 8.

The Cubs have offered him a chance to rehab at the complex in Mesa, then play at Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs said Victorino has not decided what to do.

On Thursday, Victorino met with Theo Epstein and manager Joe Maddon.

“He’s not going to be able to start the season with us,” Maddon said of the veteran outfielder. “We’re working on alternative plans right now.”

With Victorino out of the picture, my guess is the final bench spot will come down to Szczur (who is conveniently on the 40-man already and would give the Cubs extra speed and late-inning OF defense) and Kawasaki (who would give the Cubs more IF versatility and be a good clubhouse guy and fan favorite). Andreoli might be the dark horse, but his strike out numbers this spring are a little disconcerting, especially for a team that is expected to strike out a lot this season. Anyone else (Negron, Murton, Guzman, Almora) seem like a long shot are would be better off stashed at AAA for the time being.

Aloha Doug- I was also thinking about Murton and Szczur; who would remain. Even though Murton hit well in Japan, it is quite a different story in the MLB. Also, Szczur is younger and an asset in the outfield. I thought Kawasaki (putting any of my biases aside..) had a good shot at making the team after La Stella’s situation. I also felt that with Baez, Zobrist and even Bryant if need be there are additional folks that could fill in the outfield when needed. Kawasaki has another start today at SS, if he plays well there as he has shown at 2nd he fills a need as well. “Gunbaremasu Kawasaki-san!” Hope you all have a Good Friday. Mahalo!
