#Cubs lineup & Arrieta update

Jason Hammel will start Sunday against the Mariners at Sloan Park in Mesa. The game will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet and also 670 AM. Here’s the lineup:

Fowler CF

Heyward RF

Bryant 3B

Rizzo 1B

Schwarber C

Zobrist 2B

Russell SS

Szczur LF

Hammel P

Could this be a regular season lineup?

“Playing around — just playing around,” Maddon said of the batting order. “There’s nothing to be read into it, honestly. Just playing around with different thoughts.”

*Looking ahead, Kyle Hendricks will start Monday against the Angels in Tempe, and Jake Arrieta is on track to start Tuesday against the A’s. Arrieta threw 46 pitches in a bullpen session on Sunday, and is on schedule to start Opening Night April 4.

Well Szcur wont likely even be on the opening day roster so he’s not likely to be in a regular season lineup and if he did make the roster he’d be on the bench. I imagine Soler would be lin left.

It is hard to imagine Soler sitting on the bench for a defensive sub in left field. Szcur gives us speed and defense off the bench – and his bat is developing!

I believe Szcur is out of options too. But I agree that it’s hard to imagine Soler sitting on the bench. Other than his unfamiliarity in left field, I think his upside dwarfs Szcur’s, offensively & defensively. But he needs more at bats. The Cubs might prefer to have Soler getting regular playing time in AAA as opposed to sitting on the bench. I’m pulling for him to have a breakout year. He looked so good in the post season & Maddon wanted him to bring that intensity & focus to the regular season. Maybe a “reminder” in the minors that others are ready to take his place is wha he needs. Either way it’s shaping up to be a fun season.
