#Cubs and Hammel face Pirates

Jason Hammel takes the mound at Wrigley Field on Friday to open the Cubs’ three-game series against the Pirates. Here’s the lineup:

Fowler CF

Heyward RF

Bryant 3B

Rizzo 1B

Zobrist 2B

Soler LF

Russell SS

Ross C

Hammel P

At 25-8, the Cubs are off to their best start through 33 games since the team went 26-7 to open the 1907 season.

Today was an example of why Earl Weaver was the principal advocate for the three-run homer, and is just one of the reasons he was one of the best managers the game has ever seen. We potentially have a man at the helm who may one day merit being placed in the same category.

Earl Weaver and Joe Maddon have something in common, namely that neither has ever played a single game at the major league level. {I`ve been arguing for years that this type of baseball lifer makes the best skipper, but I digress.} Earl reached the Promised Land (a World Series championship ) just once,1970, and yet occupies an elevated status in the pantheon of major league managers. Joe Maddon needs to win at least one Fall Classic to rank on Earl`s level, and if he wins more, Joe could surpass Weaver`s status, and if that scenario comes to pass, Cubs` fans will be the greatest beneficiaries of all.

Aloha jhosk, that is neat. Today was a very good win after the Padres’ series. I am sure a lot of eyes are on Hammel and how he holds up. He pitched 7 strong innings today, got a hit too. And what can you say about Addison getting things going! Take care now. Mahalo!
