#Cubs sign Joe Nathan

The Cubs added some depth on Tuesday, signing right-handed pitcher Joe Nathan to a Major League contract. Nathan won’t be joining the team immediately; he was placed on the 60-day disabled list as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery in April 2015.

Nathan, 41, is a six-time All-Star who has earned 377 saves, eighth most in Major League history, in 15 seasons with the Giants, (1999-2000, 2002-03), Twins (2004-09, 2011), Rangers (2012-13) and Tigers (2014-15).

Nathan made one appearance with the Tigers last year before undergoing surgery.

Aloha Folks- I have to say I like this; loved Joe when with the Giants and they consider that one of their worst trades. Low risk in (financially) this and hopefully he can contribute if things go well. Gunbatene Joe-san! Mahalo!

At worst, he’s on the team for a blink of an eye, gets hurt and/or is bad, and is quietly released with no real harm done (think Rafael Soriano and his forgettable 6 games as a Cub last season). At best, he gives the Cubs some bullpen depth and veteran experience for the second half of the season.

Aloha Doug, agreed. Your comparison to Soriano last year is a good example. I think Nathan comes to the organization even cheaper. So, I am sure that Nathan will be on a short-leash like Rafael was but hope he can produce. I also love the fact that the organization has so many veterans that still have something to offer, want to participate (Murton, Victorino, Kawasaki) and I think many of them will be called on in the near future. Take care now. Mahalo!
