#Cubs roster moves

The Cubs recalled right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton from Triple-A Iowa, placed outfielder Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list with a right rib contusion. The Cubs also placed right-handed pitcher Joe Smith on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

Coghlan, 31, was batting .222 with four doubles and five RBI in 27 games since returning to the Cubs in June.

Smith, 32, was acquired from the Angels on Aug. 1 and has posted no record with a 7.36 ERA (3 ER/3.2 IP) in six appearances with the Cubs.

With Smith going on the DL, Trevor Cahill will stay on the Cubs’ 25-man roster.

You`ll forgive me if I perceive the Smith injury as being in the “phantom injury” category. It`s a convenient way of removing Joe from the roster, as he has ” sucked” in his mound appearances since he`s been signed. If y`all want to accuse me of being cynical, I plead guilty as charged.
