#Cubs and Hammel face Cards

Jason Hammel gets the start Tuesday night in the second game of the Cubs’ three-game set against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Hammel is coming off a rough start in which he gave up nine runs and a career-high 13 hits over 5 2/3 innings. The Cubs have won 10 of their last 14 games. Hammel is 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA in two starts at Busch Stadium.

Here’s the lineup:

Fowler CF

Bryant 3B

Rizzo 1B

Soler LF

Zobrist 2B

Russell SS

Heyward RF

Contreras C

Hammel P

Aloha Folks, on paper the Cardinals match-up better against Hammel than today’s lineup against Garcia. But I hope that Fowler/Rizzo/Heyward/Russell emerge today and get to him. Hammel needs a big game to make a case to be a starter on the post-season roster. Go Cubs! Mahalo!

Hope Hammel eats his potato chips before the game. Either way I feel like Hammel wont be making a start in the playoffs barring injury to one of the superstars. I like Hammel a lot and will be rooting for him, and he knows to keep his playoff hopes alive he needs to be lights out, so here’s hoping he will be.

Aloha Bob, not sure if Hammel had them chips as he gave up a hr with 2 outs. The inning before it hurt with bases loaded and Bryant ko’d. I have to give Matheny credit for pulling Garcia before Kris’ ab. Well, they have to battle now. Hammel needs to limit the damage. Take care. Mahalo!

Aloha Bob, tough game to listen to, poorly executed offensively. Would be easy to pick on Hammel but the offense just was not there. Bryant had big opportunities and left many on base. Poor Heyward is something like 0-25 ab’s. And Reyes walks 6 batters and no runs?! This is what has to get corrected going into the post-season. Let’s hope they can come back. Mahalo!

I did not predict the Cubs would win tonight`s game, and the team met my expectations. Ten men left on base is very revealing. I want to comment on Cowboy Joe West further, if y`all will indulge me. He umpired at third base tonight, and was behind the plate Monday, as you recall. I mentioned elsewhere that he has been around forever, and the fact that West umpired the game in which Willie McCovey clouted his 500th home run in 1978 reinforces that assertion, I suggest. Cowboy Joe West has a long history with our Cubs. Back in 1991, Andre Dawson, one of my all-time favorite Cubs` players, had a disagreement with the same umpire at Wrigley Field. (I first saw Dawson play for the Expos in 1977 in Montreal versus the Cubs at Expos` Stadium, one of the ugliest baseball venues you would ever expect to see; but I digress.) That day in 1991, the Hawk was accused of bumping the umpire, Joe West, and was fined $1,000.00 for his transgression. Andre mailed a check to the league office for that amount, and wrote the following on the memo line: “Donation for the blind.”

Aloha jhosk, LOL! Well, tonight was an ugly lost. Sure I wish Hammel pitched better but for the team to let Reyes off the hook after giving up 6bb’s is bad not to mention that he must have known how their RISP troubles are this year because he was willing to pitch around Rizzo and load the bases, no runs scored. So, they have to win tomorrow just to be 5-4 on this road trip and even again with the Cardinals for the regular season series. The teams Maddon must be concerned about are the Cardinals/Mets and Dodgers. Kudos to Matheny tonight, hard for me to say this but he out-managed Joe on this evening and his decision to yank Garcia was the call of the night. There is a lot of work to be done in these last 3 weeks and Joe has to make some hard decisions, like does he “rest” Heyward again? We will see. By the way, Warren sure seems to like being back in NY, got another win tonight. Take care now. Mahalo!

Well, there went what I was hoping for. I hoped for a sweep, but clinching at Wrigley will be fantastic. Hammel pitched pretty well. Those two homers just bit him.
