#Cubs and Lester face Cardinals

Jon Lester closes the Cubs’ series against the Cardinals on Wednesday in a day game at Busch Stadium. In his last eight starts, Lester is 6-0 with a 1.17 ERA and a complete game. He’s tied the Nationals’ Max Scherzer and the Tigers’ Justin Verlander for the ML lead with 23 quality starts. With a win,  Lester could join Jake Arrieta on top of the NL in Ws.

Here’s the lineup:

Fowler CF

Bryant LF

Rizzo 1B

Zobrist 2B

Russell SS

Heyward RF

Baez 3B

Ross C

Lester P

Looking ahead to the Cubs vs. Brewers at Wrigley Field, here are the pitching matchups:

Thursday: LHP Mike Montgomery (1-1, 3.67) vs. RHP Jimmy Nelson (7-14, 4.42)

Friday: RHP John Lackey (9-8, 3.35) vs. RHP Chase Anderson (8-11, 4.53)

Saturday: RHP Jake Arrieta (17-6, 2.91) vs. RHP Zach Davies (10-7, 3.87)

Sunday: RHP Kyle Hendricks (15-7, 2.03) vs. RHP Wily Peralta (6-10, 5.42)

Beautiful! Played like World Series champs. So why do I have recurring playoff doubts? I think of Chris Berman describing a guy who catches a long pass: “And he could go…all…the…” But then the receiver starts his victory dance before the end zone, gets hit from behind and fumbles at the 1-yard line. And Chris says, “but he doesn’t.” Come on, Cubs fans, reassure me.

Aloha Bruce, hope you are doing well. I think a lot of it is “mental,” meaning do they the team believe they can win. On paper they are good. This is one reason I would like to see them finish the season out strong, not like the Cardinals last year. Their last series against St. Louis at home is important too because right now in 2016 they are tied 8-8. I wrote recently that the last 23 games of last year they ended 16-7 and 10 of those wins were on the road. This year they are having a rough time on the road and need to correct this. Thankfully they won today and ended this trip on a positive note. I believe they have the tools; they need to believe it. Take care now! Mahalo!
