12/27 Winter league update

Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up three runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings and took the loss in Zulia’s loss to Caribes on Monday in Venezuelan Winter League play. He had given up four runs over 42 1/3 innings in his previous seven starts.

Bryan LaHair is batting .263 for Magallanes in Venezuela with 14 homers and 28 RBIs in 44 games.

Cubs prospect Marco Carillo gave up one unearned run on three hits over six innings and struck out five in Obregon’s 4-2 win over Culiacan in Mexican Winter League baseball.

12/17 Winter league update

Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up one unearned run on six hits over seven innings and struck out five in Zulia’s 9-1 win over Aragua in Dominican Winter League play. With the win, Bibens-Dirkx improved to 6-2, and he has a 2.20 ERA.

12/2 Winter league update

While the Venezuelan Winter League waits for Carlos Zambrano’s return to the mound, here is an update on Cubs prospects playing this offseason:

Austin Bibens-Dirkx is 5-2 with a 2.91 ERA in nine games (eight starts) for Zulia in Venezuela. He has given up 15 earned runs on 34 hits and 14 walks over 46 1/3 innings, striking out 28. Teams were hitting .204 against the right-hander.

Jay Jackson is 2-2 with a 5.11 ERA in four games (three starts) for Leones del Caracas in Venezuela. In his last start Nov. 30, he gave up five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings, striking out four.

Bryan LaHair is batting .245 in 28 games with Navegantes del Magallanes in Venezuela. He took a break in November, and in four games since his return Nov. 27, he is 2-for-15 with one home run. He has struck out 34 times in 106 at-bats. LaHair is hitting .167 against left-handed pitching.

In Mexico, Blake Parker has a 3.76 ERA in 24 games, giving up 11 runs on 21 hits and six walks over 26 1/3 innings. Teams were hitting .221 against the right-hander.

In the Dominican Republic, lefty John Gaub has a 5.63 ERA in 13 games for Leones del Escogido, giving up five runs on five hits and four walks over eight innings. He has 11 strikeouts, and teams were batting .172 against him.

Also in the Dominican, lefty Scott Maine posted a 0.90 ERA in 12 games. He gave up four runs (one earned) on five hits and five walks over 10 innings while striking out nine. Teams batted .143 against Maine, who did not give up a hit to a lefty batter (0-for-8).

11/28 Winter League update

Cubs prospect Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up two runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings in Zulia’s 7-3 win over Margarita on Sunday in Venezuela Winter League play. Bibens-Dirkx struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Jay Jackson, who pitched at Triple-A Iowa last season, pitched one inning in relief on Sunday and picked up the win for Caracas in a 5-4 victory over Lara. Jackson did strike out two of the five batters he faced. The right-hander started on Friday and picked up the win for Caracas.

10/31 Winter ball update

Cubs prospect Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up three hits and walked one over six scoreless innings to help Aguilas del Zulia beat Margarita, 4-1, on Sunday in Venezuelan Winter League action. It was the right-hander’s first win in three starts for Zulia, and his longest outing. He now has 11 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.

Also, Bryan LaHair was 1-for-4 in Magallanes’ 5-0 loss to Caracas. LaHair is batting .314.

8/29 Minor matters & Silva

Kudos to Carlos Silva, who not only paid for the postgame spread for the Class A Peoria team after his rehab outing Friday but also took care of the visiting team. Silva also stuck around to talk to the Minor League players.

Back to the games. Bryan LaHair hit his 21st home run, a two-run shot in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost 5-4 to Omaha Saturday night. The Iowa Cubs now have a half game lead in the PCL Northern Division. Austin Bibens-Dirkx took the loss, giving up five runs on five hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings.

Trey McNutt gave up four runs, two earned on six hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 8-7 win over Birmingham. It was manager Bill Dancy’s 1,600th win. Russ Canzler hit a walkoff homer in the ninth for the Smokies. Brandon Guyer had four hits and four RBIs.

Nicholas Struck gave up one run on three hits over four innings but took the loss in Daytona’s 3-0 loss to Lakeland. The Cubs were held to four hits.

D.J. Fitzgerald had four hits and four RBIs in Peoria’s 7-1 win over Clinton. Anthony Giansanti had three hits and one RBIs and Hak-Ju Lee had two hits and an RBI.

Alvaro Ramirez had two hits and one RBIs in Boise’s 3-2 loss to Spokane. Brent Ebinger took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits over five innings.

8/24 Minor matters

Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up eight runs on 10 hits over five innings in Iowa’s 8-6 loss to Nashville on Monday. Ty Wright posted his seventh multi-hit game and Robinson Chirinos had two RBIs.

Trey McNutt gve up five runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in Tennessee’s 7-4 loss to West Tenn. Steve Clevenger posted his third straight multi-hit gme, going 2-for-4. Clevenger was named the Southern League North Division Offensive Player of the Week after going 11-for-22 with five doubles, two homers and 11 RBIs from ug. 16-22.

Daytona split a doubleheader against Brevard County, losing the first game 7-3 and winning the second, 4-2. DJ LeMahieu was 2-for-7 in the two games and has an eight game hitting streak.

Logan Watkins had a triple and a stolen base but it wasn’t enough in Peoria’s 3-1 loss to Clinton. Elliot Soto had two hits in Boise’s 7-0 loss to Vancouver. Cameron Greathouse was named Northwest League Pitcher of the Week for Aug. 16-22 after throwing six scoreless innings in one start and striking out eight.

7/11 Minor matters – a day late

Belated report from Friday’s games:

Sam Fuld had three hits, including his third home run, but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost 6-3 to New Orleans in the first game of a doubleheader. Hung-Wen Chen took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits over four innings. In the second game, Austin Bibens-Dirkx picked up the win in his first Triple-A start as Iowa topped New Orleans, 6-1. Bibens-Dirkx gave up one run on four hits over five innings and struck out four. He also hit a double and drove in a run. Ty Wright had three hits, including two doubles, and was batting .310 in 10 games with the Iowa Cubs.

Josh Vitters and Robinson Chirinos both homered but it wasn’t enough as Tennessee lost 7-6 to Jacksonville. Vitters had two RBIs, Chirinos three. Also, lefty Luke Sommer was added to the North Division for the Southern League All-Star Game to be played Monday. He replaces teammate David Cales, who was promoted to Iowa.

Rebel Ridling hit two home runs in Daytona’s 7-6 win over Tampa. Ridling drove in four runs, including a pair on a game-winning homer in the ninth. Kyler Burke has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games.

Nick Struck gave up one run on four hits over six innings in Peoria’s 4-3 loss to Kane County. Jae-Hoon Ha had two hits.

Alvaro Ramirez had three hits and five RBIs in Boise’s 9-6 win over Eugene. John Mincone struck out three over 4 2/3 innings, and gave up five runs, but all were unearned and all came in the fifth inning.

Dustin Harrington was a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5, in Mesa’s 9-8, 10-inning loss to the Giants. Harrington had four RBIs. He hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh and was 5-for-13 in his last three games.

7/7 Minor matters

Brad Snyder hit a three-run double in the seventh but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost 6-4 to Albuquerque on Tuesday. Ty Wright also drove in a run and is batting .333 in his last five games. Thomas Diamond took the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits and three walks over six innings.

In the second game, Jeff Samardzija gave up two hits over five scoreless innings and struck out eight but did not get a decision in Iowa’s 5-0 loss to Albuquerque. Samardzija walked one and is now 5-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Snyder had the only hit for the Iowa Cubs.

Brett Jackson had two hits but Tennessee was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position in a 3-0 loss to Huntsville. Craig Muschko started, throwing five scoreless innings. Congrats to Austin Bibens-Dirkx, who was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week for June 28-July 4. It’s his second this season. In two starts, he gave up one earned run over 11 innings, plus six hits, four walks and struck out 13.

Chris Rusin gave up one hit over seven scoreless innings and struck out seven in Daytona’s 11-1 victory over Clearwater. Rusin took a no-hitter into the seventh. Rebel Ridling hit his sixth homer and Smaily Borges hit his fourth. Michael Brenly had two hits and two RBIs. Kyler Burke and Junior Lake each drove in two runs.

Austin Kirk gave up two runs on four hits over five innings in Boise’s 4-2 win over Spokane. Richard Jones homered, a solo shot.
