6/6 Parker to DL

Cubs reliever Blake Parker is going on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow stress reaction, and Manny Corpas’ contract will be purchased from Triple-A Iowa. A stress reaction is a contusion, and it was confirmed by an MRI. He will require treatment as if it is a stress fracture. Parker can’t pick up a baseball for 30 days. He last pitched Friday against the Giants, and has appeared in four games, and has not given up a run over 4 1/3 innings. Corpas has appeared in 19 games at Iowa, and in 10 in May, he has a 2.33 ERA, giving up 11 hits and walking four over 19 1/3 innings. He’s struck out 13 in that stretch and opponents were hitting .167 against him. Right-handers were batting .161 against him this season.

5/20 Marmol, Clevenger, etc. updates

Carlos Marmol and Steve Clevenger will begin rehab assignments this week at Triple-A Iowa, but neither were expected to rejoin the big league team until after next weekend. Marmol, sidelined since May 12 with a strained right hamstring, was to throw on the side Monday for Iowa, then throw a simulated game Wednesday, and, if all goes well, he’ll get into a game Friday. Clevenger, out since April 26 with a strained right oblique and rib cage injury, has been taking batting practice this weekend for the first time since he was injured. He was to play Tuesday and ease his way into game action, gradually working up to nine innings as the week progresses.

* Welington Castillo has a mild sprain of the MCL in his right knee, and was expected to miss four to seven days, depending on how he responds to treatment. He was injured on Friday on the last pitch Kerry Wood threw. Said Castillo: “I felt like I couldn’t bend my knee or go side to side.”

* Reliever Blake Parker, who came out of Saturday’s game with a tight right hamstring, underwent an MRI on Sunday. Parker said it felt more like a cramp.

5/17 Bullpen moves – UPDATED

The Cubs added another arm to the bullpen on Thursday, calling up right-hander Blake Parker from Triple-A Iowa. Parker was 1-0 and 5-for-5 in save opportunities in 13 games with Iowa, giving up three earned runs on nine hits over 13 innings. He has not pitched since Sunday, so he’s fresh. Parker has not served up a home run, and has held hitters to a .200 average. The 26-year-old reliever, who turns 27 on June 19, has yet to appear in the big leagues, pitching at Double-A Tennessee and Iowa last season.

Parker’s contract was purchased from Iowa, and the 40-man roster is now at 39. Scott Maine was optioned to Iowa to make room on the 25-man roster.

“I liked him a lot in Spring Training,” Dale Sveum said. “He’s got an above average slider and that’s one thing we need right now is somebody who can go through right-handers with a slider. He’s got velocity. He’s a guy who has done a nice job and you have to start rewarding guys who’ve done a nice job.”

The Cubs’ bullpen has struggled, compiling the worst record in the National League at 5-11, which includes Wednesday’s loss to the Phillies. Chicago’s relief corps ranks 26th in the Majors with a 4.76 ERA. The are fourth in the National League in most hits allowed (57), trailing the Mets, Brewers and Rockies.
