8/5 Minor matters

Brad Snyder drove in three runs to help Iowa beat Tacoma, 9-3, on Wednesday. Hung-Wen Chen gave up two runs on six hits over six innings for the win. Snyder hit a two-run double while Micah Hoffpauir extended his hitting streak to 13 games. He also drove in one run.

Craig Muschko gave up one run on seven hits over seven innings in Tennessee’s 3-1 win over Montgomery. Russ Canzler had three hits and one RBIs.

Ryan Flaherty hit a two-run homer in the ninth but it wasn’t enough as Daytona lost 18-4 to Jupiter. The Cubs gave up 10 runs in the eighth inning. Dae-Eun Rhee took the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out six. DJ LeMahieu had three hits.

Brandon May hit a RBI single in Peoria’s 3-1 loss to Wisconsin. Frank Batista gave up three runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Cameron Greathouse, the Cubs’ eighth-round pick out of Gulf Coast Community College, gave up one run over five scoreless innings in Boise’s 7-0 win over Tri-City. Alvaro Ramirez had three hits and one RBIs.

Chad Noble, a 37th round selection in June out of Northwestern University, had two hits and five RBIs in Mesa’s 8-6 win over the Dodgers in 10 innings. Fourth-round pick Hunter Ackerman threw two scoreless, hitless innings.

8/2 Minor matters

Jay Jackson gae up four runs on six hits over six innings and struck out eight in Iowa’s 9-5 win over Oklahoma City. Brad Snyder hit two home runs, and now has 17 for the season. He finished with five RBIs. His 79 RBIs lead the team. Matt Camp had three hits.

Brandon Guyer and Matt Spencer each homered in Tennessee’s 6-4 win over West Tenn. Kyle Smit, whom the Cubs acquired Saturday from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot, Blake DeWitt deal, picked up the win, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Marcos Mateo got the save and was promoted to Triple-A Iowa.

Brett Wallach, the other Minor League pitcher whom the Cubs acquired in the deal, was scheduled to start Monday for Class A Peoria. The Chiefs scored nine runs in the first to beat Beloit, 10-7. Nick Struck earned the win in relief, throwing 4 1/3 innings.

Austin Kirk gave up one run on four hits over four innings and struck out seven in Boise’s 6-5 win over Vancouver. John Gaub gave up four runs (three earned) on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning for Mesa in a 9-7 loss to the Athletics.

7/28 Minor matters

Welington Castillo hit a grand slam, Brad Snyder had four RBIs and Micah Hoffpauir drove in three runs in Iowa’s 14-12 win over Albuquerque Tuesday. Sam Fuld scored four runs and Darwin Barney scored three in the slugfest. Jay Jackson picked up the win, giving up seven runs on eight hits over five innings.

Tennessee had the day off and opens a five-game homestand against West Tenn Wednesday.

Brooks Raley gave up three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings in Daytona’s 7-5 win over Palm Beach. Michael Brenly had a hit, and has reached base safely in 25 straight games. He’s gotten a hit in 24 of those games. DJ LeMahieu, Ryan Flaherty, Junior Lake and Rebel Ridling each had two hits.

Peoria had the day off and opens a three-game series against Wisconsin Wednesday. Boise faces Vancouver Wednesday. Vismeldy Bieneme had two hits in Mesa’s 3-0 win over the Padres.

7/28 Zambrano update

Carlos Zambrano gave up three runs on three hits in the seventh inning in the Iowa Cubs’ 14-12 win over Albuquerque Tuesday night. Zambrano, making his third appearance for Iowa, got the first batter to ground out but Jamie Hoffman singled and Big Z then hit A.J. Ellis with a pitch. Pinch-hitter Michael Restovich singled to load the bases and Zambrano walked Elian Herrera to force in a run. Trent Oeltjen struck out and Ivan DeJesus Jr. followed with a two-run single to close to 13-11. Russ Mitchell grounded out and end the inning. Zambrano threw 32 pitches, 20 for strikes.

Jay Jackson gave up seven runs on eight hits over five innings for the win. The Iowa Cubs scored six runs in the fifth. Welington Castillo hit a grand slam, Brad Snyder had four RBIs and Micah Hoffpauir drove in three runs, hitting one on his 16th homer.

Zambrano, on the restricted list, was expected to join the Cubs Friday in Denver.

7/25 Minor matters

Brad Snyder hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning to lift Iowa to a 4-2 victory over Round Rock Saturday. It was Snyder’s 15th homer. Micah Hoffpauir also homered for the Iowa Cubs, his 14th. Thomas Diamond started the game and threw six shutout innings, giving up two hits. He struck out six.

Tennessee’s game against Mississippi was postponed because of rain.

Daytona romped 10-3 over St. Lucie. Michael Brenly had two hits and one RBI, and Ryan Flaherty hit a homer and drove in two runs. David Macias had three RBIs.

Frank Batista struck out 10 over 4 2/3 innings but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost, 3-0, to Lake County. Batista gave up two runs on one hit.

Matt Szczur extended his hitting streak to 16 games with two hits in Boise’s 6-5 loss to Yakima. He’s batting .415 in that stretch.

Dustin Harrington had three hits in Mesa’s 7-2 win over the Angels.

7/19 Minor matters

Brad Snyder had two hits and two RBIs in Iowa’s 17-6 loss to Oklahoma City Sunday. J.R. Mathes took the loss, giving up 11 runs on 13 hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings. Micah Hoffpauir ahd two hits and three RBIs.

Robinson Chirinos hit his 13th homer and drove in three runs in Tennessee’s 7-6 win over Montgomery. Jeremy Papelbon gave up three runs on four hits over five innings and did not get a decision. Tony Campana had three hits and stole his 31st base.

Dae-Eun Rhee gave up one run on two hits over six innings in Daytona’s 5-1 win over Charlotte. Junior Lake hit his fifth homer. Michael Brenly extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a single. He’s batting .400 during his stretch.

Nelson Perez had two hits and two RBIs in Peoria’s 9-0 win over Bowling Green. Frank Batista started and threw four scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out three. Ronny Moria earned the win in relief.

Alvero Ramirez had four hits including his third homer in Boise’s 12-11 loss to Spokane. Ramirez now has a 16-game hitting streak, and is batting .441 in that streak.

Joseph Zeller gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out eight over 3 2/3 innings in Mesa’s 9-3 win over the Reds. Albert Hernandez had three hits and Pin-Chieh Chen, Brian Shields and Blair Springfield each had two hits.

7/18 Minor matters

Brad Snyder hit a pair of three-run homers to extend his hitting streak to 13 games and lead Iowa to a 9-4 win over Oklahoma City Saturday. Jay Jackson picked up the win, giving up one run on seven hits over five innings. He struck out six. Snyder was 3-for-4 and a season-high six RBIs. Welington Castillo also homered, his 10th.

Robinson Chirinos hit his 12th homer but it wasn’t enough as Tennessee lost 5-4 in 14 innings to Montgomery. Steve Clevenger had three hits.

Rebel Ridling hit his ninth homer and Mark Reed his first in Daytona’s 9-4 loss to Ft. Myers. Michael Brenly did get a hit to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

Robert Whitenack threw seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits, in Peoria’s 5-0 win over Bowling Green. Whitenack struck out four and did not walk a batter. Luis Flores hit his second homer.

Eduardo Figueroa gave up one run on six hits over five innings in Boise’s 10-3 win over Salem-Keizer. Boise totaled 18 hits in the game, including four by Arismendy Alcantara.

Sergio Burruel had two hits and three RBIs in Mesa’s 13-11 win over the Mariners. Jeff Gray, rehabbing from a groin injury, started and gave up one run on two hits over one inning. Austin Reed picked up the win, throwing three scoreless innings in relief.

7/12 Minor matters

Brad Snyder hit a walkoff homer with two outs in the 10th to lift Iowa to a 2-1 victory over New Orleans on Sunday. Snyder had singled in the fourth and was batting .325 in his last 10 games. Thomas Diamond, who was named to the PCL All-Star team, started and gave up one hit over three scoreless innings.

* The Double-A All-Star Game takes place Monday night in Huntsville, Ala.

* Greg Rohan, Smaily Borges and Junior Lake all homered in the seventh inning to power Daytona to an 8-7 win over Clearwater. Rohan got things started by hitting a two-run homer. Christopher Rusin gave up four runs on five hits over five innings and did not get a decision. Michael Brenly extended his hitting streak to 12 games and was batting .444 in that stretch.

* Peoria’s game against Cedar Rapids on Sunday was postponed because of rain and was to be made up Monday as a doubleheader.

* Austin Kirk gave up one run on three hits over 4 1/3 innings in Boise’s 9-4 loss to Eugene. Richard Jones had two hits, including a double.

7/7 Minor matters

Brad Snyder hit a three-run double in the seventh but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost 6-4 to Albuquerque on Tuesday. Ty Wright also drove in a run and is batting .333 in his last five games. Thomas Diamond took the loss, giving up six runs on nine hits and three walks over six innings.

In the second game, Jeff Samardzija gave up two hits over five scoreless innings and struck out eight but did not get a decision in Iowa’s 5-0 loss to Albuquerque. Samardzija walked one and is now 5-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Snyder had the only hit for the Iowa Cubs.

Brett Jackson had two hits but Tennessee was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position in a 3-0 loss to Huntsville. Craig Muschko started, throwing five scoreless innings. Congrats to Austin Bibens-Dirkx, who was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week for June 28-July 4. It’s his second this season. In two starts, he gave up one earned run over 11 innings, plus six hits, four walks and struck out 13.

Chris Rusin gave up one hit over seven scoreless innings and struck out seven in Daytona’s 11-1 victory over Clearwater. Rusin took a no-hitter into the seventh. Rebel Ridling hit his sixth homer and Smaily Borges hit his fourth. Michael Brenly had two hits and two RBIs. Kyler Burke and Junior Lake each drove in two runs.

Austin Kirk gave up two runs on four hits over five innings in Boise’s 4-2 win over Spokane. Richard Jones homered, a solo shot.

7/4 Minor matters

Brad Snyder, Bryan LaHair, Bobby Scales and Sam Fuld all homered but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost 6-5 to Omaha on a walkoff home run by Rick Ankiel on Saturday. Mitch Atkins notched his fifth quality start, giving up three runs on five hits over six innings.

Rafael Dolis threw six shutout innings in his second start for Double-A Tennessee but did not get a decision in a 5-0 win over West Tenn. Brett Jackson had one hit, and has hit safely in six of seven games since being promoted.

Daytona’s game against Tampa was postponed because of rain.

Greg Rohan had three hits, including his fifth homer, in Peoria’s 9-5 loss to Kane County. The Cougars scored four runs in the eighth for the win. Hak-Ju Lee and Justin Bour each had two hits.

John Mincone gave up two runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings in Boise’s 4-3 win over Yakima. Richard Jones had two hits and Corey Martin converted his sixth save, pitching 1 2/3 innings.

Brent Ebinger gave up one hit over three scoreless innings in Mesa’s 8-2 win over the Reds. Dustin Harrington had two RBIs and Ryan Cuneo had three hits and two RBIs.
