8/3 Minor matters

Newly acquired Brett Wallach took the loss in Peoria’s 7-5 loss to Beloit Monday night. Wallach, acquired from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly/Ryan Theriot/Blake DeWitt deal, didn’t get much help as the Chiefs committed five errors, three while he was in the game. Wallach gave up five runs, three earned, on eight hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up three runs on three hits over five innings in Iowa’s 5-3 win over Oklahoma City. Jason Dubois and Welington Castillo both had two hits and both homered. Bibens-Dirkx now is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA. Congrats to Bryan LaHair who was named PCL offensive player of the week for July 26-Aug. 1. He hit .455 in that stretch with four homers and 14 RBIs.

Brett Jackson and Russ Canzler both homered in Tennessee’s 4-3, 10-inning loss to Montgomery. Chris Carpenter gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out eight. He did not get a decision. Congrats to Brandon Guyer, who was named Southern League offensive player of the week for July 26-Aug. 1. He hit .524 in that stretch with eight RBIs.

Alex Maestri struck out four in three innings of relief to help Daytona beat Bradenton, 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. But the Cubs’ winning streak was snapped at 14 games when they lost the nightcap, 4-3. Michael Brenly did hit his fifth homer of the season in the second game. Congrats to Rebel Ridling, named FSL offensive player of the week for July 26-Aug. 1. He hit .524 in that stretch with 10 RBIs.

Matt Loosen gave up three runs, two earned on six hits over four innings in Boise’s 4-3 loss to Tri-City. Reggie Golden had two hits, including a double, in Mesa’s 6-4, 12-inning loss to the Reds in the first game of a doubleheader. In the second game, Yao-Lin Wang gave up six runs, none earned on three hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings in a 9-3 loss.

8/2 Minor matters

Jay Jackson gae up four runs on six hits over six innings and struck out eight in Iowa’s 9-5 win over Oklahoma City. Brad Snyder hit two home runs, and now has 17 for the season. He finished with five RBIs. His 79 RBIs lead the team. Matt Camp had three hits.

Brandon Guyer and Matt Spencer each homered in Tennessee’s 6-4 win over West Tenn. Kyle Smit, whom the Cubs acquired Saturday from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot, Blake DeWitt deal, picked up the win, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Marcos Mateo got the save and was promoted to Triple-A Iowa.

Brett Wallach, the other Minor League pitcher whom the Cubs acquired in the deal, was scheduled to start Monday for Class A Peoria. The Chiefs scored nine runs in the first to beat Beloit, 10-7. Nick Struck earned the win in relief, throwing 4 1/3 innings.

Austin Kirk gave up one run on four hits over four innings and struck out seven in Boise’s 6-5 win over Vancouver. John Gaub gave up four runs (three earned) on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning for Mesa in a 9-7 loss to the Athletics.

7/27 Minor matters

Jeff Samardzija gave up three runs, one earned, on two hits and give walks over six innings in Iowa’s 6-5 loss to Round Rock. Samardzija also hit his first homer, going 2-for-3, and struck out seven. Bryan LaHair also homered.

Rafael Dolis gave up one run on two hits over three innings in Tennessee’s 10-5 win over Mississippi. Tony Thomas drove in four runs and hit his eighth home run. Brandon Guyer had three hits.

Nicholas Struck gave up two runs on three hits in five innings in Peoria’s 6-5 win over Lake County. The Chiefs turned four double plays in the win. Nelson Perez hit a solo homer.

Matt Szczur extended his hitting streak to 18 games in Boise’s 4-3 loss to Yakima. He also had two RBIs.

6/20 Minor matters

Jeff Samardzija and John Gaub combined to throw six shutout innings of relief to help Iowa beat Albuquerque, 3-2, in 14 innings Saturday. Starter Thomas Diamond gave up two runs on four hits over six innings, striking out six. Samardzija and Gaub gave up a total of two hits. Jim Adduci delivered a pinch-hit game-winning single in the 14th.

Chris Carpenter gave up one earned run on five hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 4-3 loss to West Tenn. Despite the loss, the Smokies clinched the first half North Division championship. Ty Wright had three hits and is batting .555 in his last four games. Brandon Guyer homered for the Smokies.

Dae-Eun Rhee gave up two runs on three hits and one walk over six innings in Daytona’s 3-2 win over Dunedin. Mark Reed hit a RBI single for the game-winner in the 11th. Brett Jackson had two hits for his 25th multi-hit game.

Justin Bour homered but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost to Quad Cities, 7-2. Jeffry Antigua gave up one run on five hits over four innings.

Boise picked up its first win, a 5-3 victory over Yakima. Jesus Morelli had two hits and one RBI.

4/21 Minor matters

Thomas Diamond gave up one run on three hits over six innings in Iowa’s 4-3 loss to Memphis. Brad Snyder extended his hitting streak to six games with a ninth inning solo homer. It was his 100th Minor League homer.

Brandon Guyer threw out a runner at home in the ninth to preserve Tennessee’s 6-5 win over Carolina. Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and two RBIs. He’s hitting .406 in that streak.

Alberto Cabrera gave up six runs, three earned, on seven hits over four innings in Daytona’s 6-4 loss to Dunedin. Brett Jackson extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a triple. He’s hitting .415 in that stretch.

Justin Bour went 3-for-3 to help Peoria rally for an 8-7, 11-inning win over Kane County. Hak-Ju Lee extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 1-for-5, and Matt Cerda had two hits, including a triple.

10/13 AFL & Instructs update

Cubs prospect Starlin Castro went 3-for-5 with three RBIs Tuesday for the Mesa Solar Sox in a 10-6 win over Phoenix to kick off the Arizona Fall League. Castro was the only Cubs player to see any action Tuesday, and he was the designated hitter. He was expected to start Wednesday along with third baseman Josh Vitters, and pitchers John Gaub, Blake Parker and James Russell were scheduled to pitch when the Solar Sox play host to Phoenix at HoHoKam Park at 6:35 p.m. Arizona time.

* In Instructional League play in Scottsdale, Cubs Minor Leaguer Drew Rundle, who is being converted from outfielder to pitcher, appeared in his first game on the mound, and retired the side in order. Rundle was the Cubs’ 14th round pick in 2006.

Thomas Diamond, whom the Cubs claimed off waivers from Texas on Sept. 4, started the game against the Giants’ team. The squad had a pretty impressive looking outfield in Brandon Guyer, June 2009 No. 1 Draft pick Brett Jackson and Kyler Burke, the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year.
