Outfielder Dave Sappelt, who was designated for assignment on Monday to make room for Zac Rosscup, cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday. On Friday, the Cubs announced that right-hander pitcher Michael Bowden and outfielder Cole Gillespie, who were both designated for assignment on Wednesday, had also cleared waivers and were assigned outright to Iowa’s roster.
The Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Daniel Bard off waivers on Wednesday. He will join the Cubs on Friday at Wrigley Field and workout with pitching coach Chris Bosio.
Bard was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Monday. Once considered one of the best set-up pitchers in baseball, he has struggled with his consistency this season. Bard pitched in two games with the Red Sox this season before he was sent to the Minor Leagues. He totaled 6 1/3 innings and threw 10 wild pitches with 23 walks at three Minor League levels in Boston’s organization.
Bard made his Major League debut in May 2009, and was an effective set-up pitcher for then closer Jonathan Papelbon. He set Red Sox records in 2010 and ’11 for holds with 32 and 34, respectively. The Red Sox tried to convert him to a starter prior to the 2012 season but he was 4-6 with a 5.30 ERA in 10 starts.
To make room for Bard, outfielder Cole Gillespie was designated for assignment.
The Cubs added outfielder Cole Gillespie to the active roster, and designated right-handed pitcher Henry Rodriguez for assignment. Gillespie was claimed off waivers on Saturday. Rodriguez had appeared in 22 games with the Nationals and Cubs this year.
The Cubs added some outfield depth Saturday by claiming Cole Gillespie off waivers from the Giants. Gillespie, 29, was originally selected in the third round of the 2006 Draft by the Brewers and made his big league debut with the Diamondbacks in 2010, appearing in 45 games. He spent most of the last three seasons in Triple-A in the Diamondbacks and Giants organizations.
Last season, he batted .308 with 35 doubles, four triples, 13 home runs, 66 RBIs, 85 runs scored and an .884 OPS in 126 games with Arizona’s Triple-A Reno affiliate. A right-handed hitter, he signed a Minor League contract with the Giants last offseason and batted .277 with 11 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 31 RBIs in 74 games with Triple-A Fresno this year. The Giants selected his contract on July 5, and he went hitless in nine big league at-bats before being designated for assignment on July 9.
He’s a career .218 hitter with eight doubles, three home runs and 16 RBIs in 53 big league games with Arizona (2010-11) and San Francisco (2013).
Gillespie was a teammate of Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney at Oregon State, and helped lead the Beavers to the 2006 National Championship.
The Cubs have been short-handed in the outfield with injuries to Ryan Sweeney (fractured rib), David DeJesus (sprained shoulder) and Minor League prospect Brett Jackson (calf).
