3/12 Quick hits

Infielder Aaron Miles was not available on Thursday because of a “barking” right shoulder. The soreness could be because Miles has been moving around from second to shortstop to third and having to make throws from the different spot. “Three different throws is not the easiest thing in the world to do,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella said.

  • Corey Koskie was in the Cubs camp, and underwent a physical on Thursday. The Cubs hope to get a good look at the infielder, who has not played since suffering a concussion in 2006.
  • Piniella did not take a hot air balloon ride on Wednesday’s off day because he would have had to get up at 5 a.m. That’s not happening on an off day.

3/10 Classic quick hits

Kosuke Fukudome stopped by HoHoKam Park on Tuesday to say hello to the Cubs players and Lou Piniella. Fukudome and Team Japan are in town to prepare for the second round of the World Baseball Classic.

Piniella said Fukudome will likely bat second in the Cubs’ lineup behind Alfonso Soriano. Other options there are Aaron Miles, Ryan Theriot and Reed Johnson.

Also, infielder Corey Koskie, whom the Cubs signed to a Minor League deal, was expected to join the team on Thursday. He was playing for Team Canada, which was eliminated on Monday. Koskie has not played in the big leagues since suffering a concussion in 2006.

  • The Cubs will take 18 players to Las Vegas for their two-game series vs. the White Sox Wednesday and Thursday. Aramis Ramirez, Ryan Theriot, Mike Fontenot and Alfonso Soriano are on the travel squad.
  • Rich Harden threw on Saturday but not to hitters. He’s about one week to 10 days away from getting in a Cactus League game.
  • Milton Bradley reported to camp, and is feeling better but will not play this weekend. He left Thursday’s game because of mild tightness in his quad. He’s day to day.
