6/20 Minor matters

Jeff Samardzija and John Gaub combined to throw six shutout innings of relief to help Iowa beat Albuquerque, 3-2, in 14 innings Saturday. Starter Thomas Diamond gave up two runs on four hits over six innings, striking out six. Samardzija and Gaub gave up a total of two hits. Jim Adduci delivered a pinch-hit game-winning single in the 14th.

Chris Carpenter gave up one earned run on five hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 4-3 loss to West Tenn. Despite the loss, the Smokies clinched the first half North Division championship. Ty Wright had three hits and is batting .555 in his last four games. Brandon Guyer homered for the Smokies.

Dae-Eun Rhee gave up two runs on three hits and one walk over six innings in Daytona’s 3-2 win over Dunedin. Mark Reed hit a RBI single for the game-winner in the 11th. Brett Jackson had two hits for his 25th multi-hit game.

Justin Bour homered but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost to Quad Cities, 7-2. Jeffry Antigua gave up one run on five hits over four innings.

Boise picked up its first win, a 5-3 victory over Yakima. Jesus Morelli had two hits and one RBI.

6/7 Minor matters

Jay Jackson gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits over six innings in Iowa’s 10-4 loss to New Orleans on Sunday. Chad Tracy and Sam Fuld each homered for the Triple-A team.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits over three innings in Tennessee’s 8-6 loss to Huntsville. Matt Spencer had three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Jeremy Papelbon pitched three scoreless innings in relief.

Dae-Eun Rhee gave up one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings in Daytona’s 6-2 win over Palm Beach. Smailey Borges had three hits. DJ LeMahieu had two hits, and now has notched at least two hits in six of his last eight games.

Trey McNutt gave up four runs (one earned) on six hits over two innings in Peoria’s 8-5 win over West Michigan, completing a game suspended on Saturday. DJ Fitzgerald hit a home run and drove in three runs.

In the second game, Ryan Searle gave up two runs on six hits over five innings in a 3-2 loss. Hak-Ju Lee had two RBIs.

5/17 Minor matters

J.R. Mathes gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings and took the loss in Iowa’s 3-1 loss to Reno on Sunday. Bryan LaHair notched his ninth multi-hit game of the year.

Double-A Tennessee was rained out at Huntsville. The two teams were to play a doubleheader on Monday.

Dae-Eun Rhee threw five scoreless innings in Daytona’s 5-3 loss to St. Lucie. Rhee did not get a decision. DJ LeMahieu and Rebel Ridling each had an RBI.

Jeff Antigua threw five scoreless innings to help Peoria beat Burlington, 8-1. Logan Watkins had four hits, including a double and triple, and also stole a base.

2/17 Far east: Cubs sign Korean pitcher

The Cubs have signed 18-year-old Korean right-hander Kim Jin-Yeong. The Duk-Soo High School pitcher is said to have a 92 mph fastball. He’ll receive a $1.2 million signing bonus.

The team already has a few Korean players on the Minor League roster, including shortstop Hak-Ju Lee, who Baseball America ranked as the Cubs’ sixth-best prospect heading into 2010. Last season, he batted .330 at Boise with 25 stolen bases. Pitcher Dae-Eun Rhee, 20, was ranked fourth best by the publication prior to the 2009 season.
