The Mesa Solar Sox face the Surprise Saguaros on Saturday in the Arizona Fall League championship game. Cubs prospect Dallas Beeler is scheduled to start for Mesa, and Kris Bryant, Jorge Soler and Albert Almora could be in the lineup. The game will be televised on MLB Network, starting at 2 p.m. CT. Bryant leads the AFL with six home runs and a 1.184 OPS.
“Anytime you play baseball, you want to be the last one on the field,” Bryant said. “A lot of us are swinging the bats well and our pitchers are throwing strikes. We’re pretty confident going into Saturday.”
The Daily Herald (Arlington Heights, Ill.) reports Ron Coomer is being considered as WGN Radio’s new color man. Coomer played for the Cubs in 2001 and has done TV work for the Twins. Coomer knows Chicago — he’s a graduate of Lockport High School and has a baseball academy in the south suburbs. WGN Radio is looking for someone to partner with play by play man Pat Hughes after Keith Moreland announced he was not coming back for the 2014 season.
Arismendy Alcantara had two hits, including a RBI single in the fifth, in Licey’s 6-2 victory over Oriente in Dominican Winter League play. Junior Lake was 2-for-4 for Oriente.
Luis Valbuena had his second straight two-hit game for Cardenales de Lara in Venezuela, which lost, 13-12, in 13 innings to La Guaira. Valbuena started at second base for the second consecutive game.
Infielder Walter Ibarra, who has been in the Yankees system since 2006, has signed a Minor League contract with the Cubs. Ibarra, 26, reached Triple-A level this season. He posted a .276/.308/.367 line combined at Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He’s primarily played short and second.
The Cubs also have signed outfielder Aaron Cunningham, 27, to a Minor League contract. A sixth-round pick in 2005 by the White Sox, Cunningham has played 222 games over five seasons with the Athletics, Padres and Indians. He spent last season at Triple-A Round Rock, and posted a .247/.337/.401 line in 115 games there with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs.
The Cubs have signed free agent catcher Eli Whiteside, 34, to a Minor League contract, according to MLB.com transactions page. He spent most of last season with the Rangers’ Triple-A team, batting .187 in 67 games. He last appeared in the Majors with the Giants in 2012.
Also, infielder Jeudy Valdez, 24, has reportedly signed a Minor League contract with the Cubs, although he did not receive a Spring Training invite. He posted a .251/.300/.406 slash line in 125 games with San Antonio last season, hitting 10 home runs and driving in 49 runs with 16 steals.

Albert Almora had three hits, including a double, and drove in a run with a RBI single in the sixth, and Kris Bryant hit two doubles in Mesa’s 4-0 victory over Peoria in Arizona Fall League action on Monday. Cubs prospect Dallas Beeler threw five shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out two. On Tuesday, Mesa plays host to Peoria at HoHoKam Stadium. This is the AFL’s final week of games.
Dallas Beeler gave up two hits over four scoreless innings in Mesa’s 7-0 win over Scottsdale Wednesday in Arizona Fall League play. Beeler faced 13 batters, struck out one and did not walk a batter. Wes Darvill scored two runs for the Solar Sox, who play host to Scottsdale on Thursday at HoHoKam Stadium in Mesa. The Solar Sox face Peoria on Friday at HoHoKam, and the AFL takes a break on Saturday for its annual Fall Stars Game, to be played in Surprise. Cubs prospects Kris Bryant, Albert Almora and Jorge Soler are all expected to play in Saturday’s game.
Jorge Soler was 3-for-4, hitting a two-run single in the first, to help the Mesa Solar Sox beat the Scottsdale Scorpions 7-4 on Thursday in Arizona Fall League play. Three Cubs prospects pitched in the game, including starter Dallas Beeler, who gave up two runs on four hits over four innings. Matt Loosen followed and served up one run on two hits over two innings. Lendy Castillo walked two and struck out one in one inning of relief. On Friday, Mesa faces the Peoria Javelinas at Surprise Stadium.
Sunday is an off day for the Arizona Fall League, but games will resume on Monday. The Mesa Solar Sox play host to Surprise at HoHoKam Park at 12:35 p.m. MT. Cubs prospect Kris Bryant is batting .423 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in six AFL games with the Solar Sox so far, while teammate Albert Almora is batting .417 with one home run, four doubles and eight RBIs in five games. Wes Darvill is 3-for-12 in four games, while Jorge Soler is batting .229 (8-for-35) with five RBIs in seven games.
Among the Cubs pitching prospects on the Solar Sox, Dallas Beeler has made two starts, and given up four earned runs over six innings, whlie Matt Loosen has appeared in three games and served up two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings. Lendy Castillo has given up one earned run over four innings in four games, and Armando Rivero has given up two earned runs over four innings in four games.
Ian Stewart had two hits and scored a run in Iowa’s 4-2 loss to Tucson on Saturday. Chris Rusin took the loss, giving up three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. On Friday, Logan Watkins hit his third hom erun and Brett Jackson was 4-for-5 in Iowa’s 9-8 loss to Tucson. Josh Vitters had two hits.
Dallas Beeler gave up two earned runs over six innings in Tennessee’s 7-5 win over Chattanooga on Saturday. Arismendy Alcantara hit his fifth home run. On Friday, Kyle Hendricks gave up three runs over seven innings in Tennessee’s 4-3 win over Chattanooga. Matt Szczur had two hits and Christian Villanueva had three hits, including two doubles, and one RBIs. It was Hendricks’ fifth quality start.
Zach Cates gave up three runs over 5 2/3 innings and Ben Carhart hit his first home run in Daytona’s 6-5 victory over Lakeland. On Friday, Jorge Soler and Dustin Geiger were a combined 8-for-8 and Yeiper Castillo gave up one run over seven innings in Daytona’s 5-1 victory over Lakeland in the first game of a doubleheader. Soler hit his sixth home run and posted his first four-hit game of the season. Geiger hit three doubles among his four hits and had four RBIs.
In the second game, Daytona won, 7-4, for the sweep. Soler was 3-for-6 with a double, and batting .297 for the season. Geiger went 3-for-4 with a double and RBIs. Javier Baez was 2-for-5 with a triple and scored three runs.
Pierce Johnson threw six shutout innings and struck out nine in Kane County’s 4-0 win over Cedar Rapids. Rock Shoulders and Oliver Zapata both homered, with Zapata finishing with three hits. On Friday, Dillon Maples gave up two runs over five hits in Kane County’s 4-3, 12-inning loss to Cedar Rapids.
