2/7 Caribbean series update

Lou Montanez went 2-for-4, scored two runs and hit a RBI single in the first in Puerto Rico’s 7-6 victory Sunday over Mexico in the Caribbean Series, being played in Puerto Rico. Montanez will be in the Cubs’ Spring Training camp as a non-roster invitee. Cubs prospect Marco Carillo gave up one hit, a RBI single in the fifth, in one-third of an inning in relief for Mexico. In Sunday’s other game, Venezuela blanked the Dominican Republic, 3-0. On Monday, Venezuela (2-3) plays Mexico (3-2) and Puerto Rico (3-2) has a rematch against the Dominican Republic (2-3).

2/5 Caribbean series update

Cubs prospect Lou Montanez went 2-for-4, including an RBI single in the seventh, in Puerto Rico’s 4-3 loss Friday to the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series. The Dominican rallied to score three runs in the ninth for the win. Welington Castillo struck out to start the ninth, but the next two batters walked and both scored on Esteban German’s triple. German then scored on a ground out. In the other game, Mexico beat Venezuela, 7-3.

On Saturday, Mexico (2-1) plays the Dominican Republic (2-1) and Puerto Rico (1-2) will play Venezuela (1-2).

2/4 Caribbean series update

Welington Castillo hit a RBI triple in the Dominican Republic’s 6-5 win over Venezuela in the Caribbean Series. Cubs prospect Eduardo Figueroa took the loss in relief. The game was tied at 3 when Figueroa took over on the mound in the fourth. He walked the first batter, then gave up a single to Ruddy Yan. Castillo sacrificed the runners over and Figueroa was pulled. Pitcher Jose Alvarez got one out, then gave up an RBI single that proved to be the game-winner. Castillo tripled with two outs in the second and tried to score on his hit but was out at home.

1/12 Winter ball update

Cubs prospect Marwin Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a double in Caracas’ 10-6 win Tuesday over Caribes in Venezuela. Caracas is 6-2 in the round-robin playoffs and Gonzalez is batting .296.

* In the Dominican Republic, both Starlin Castro and Brad Snyder were hitless in Escogido’s 2-1 loss to the Toros. Escogido dropped to 5-9; the Toros are 10-4.

* Cubs bench coach Pat Listach’s Ponce team beat Caguas, 5-2, to improve to 6-2 in Puerto Rico.

1/11 Winter ball update

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro went 3-for-5 with four RBIs but it wasn’t enough as Escogido lost 9-7 on Monday to the Toros in the Dominican Winter League playoffs. Castro hit a three-run triple in the third, a single in the seventh, and a solo homer with two outs in the eighth.

In Venezuela, Cubs prospect Marwin Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI in Caracas’ 8-5 win over Zulia. Caracas is now tied for first in the Venezuelan round-robin playoffs.

1/9 Winter ball update

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was hitless in three at-bats in Escogido’s 5-4 loss to Gigantes Saturday in the Dominican playoffs. Escogido dropped to 5-6.

1/8 Winter ball update

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro and outfielder Brad Snyder were both hitless but Escogido got enough offense to beat Estrellas, 2-1, on Friday in the Dominican League playoffs. Both Escogido and Estrellas are 5-5. In Venezuela, Cubs prospect Marwin Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a double in Caracas’ 3-2 loss to Aragua.

1/6 Winter ball update

Cubs prospect Marwin Gonzalez had a big day Wednesday in Venezuela. He
drove in a run in Caracas’ 2-0 win over Zulia in the first game of a
doubleheader. In the night cap, Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a triple and
four RBIs to complete the sweep as Caracas won, 14-4. Gonzalez hit a
three-run triple in the sixth and a RBI single in the seventh in the second game. Last season, Gonzalez batted .271 at Class A Daytona and .246 in 86 games at Double-A Tennessee.

Outfielder Brad Snyder hit a solo homer but it wasn’t enough as Escogido lost, 9-6, to Gigantes on Wednesday and dropped to 4-5 in the Dominican League playoffs. Starlin Castro was 1-for-4. Twins prospect Estarlin De Los Santos went 5-for-5 with a double and scored three runs for Gigantes.

1/5 Winter ball update

Brad Snyder was 1-for-4 and Starlin Castro was hitless in four at-bats in Escogido’s 3-1 loss to the Toros in the Dominican playoffs on Tuesday. Former Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon took the loss, giving up three runs over six innings. The Toros now are 6-2, Escogido is 4-4.

Outfielder Brad Snyder went 1-for-3 and scored a run and Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro was hitless in four at-bats in Escogido’s 3-0 win over Estrellas Monday in the Dominican Winter League playoffs. Snyder scored on one of two errors by Estrellas in the fifth. Escogido is now 4-3 and will play the Toros (5-2) on Tuesday.
