Chris Rusin threw his first complete game shutout, leading Iowa to a 2-0 win over Omaha. Rusin struck out eight, scattered five hits and walked one. He got all the offense he needed from solo homers by Donnie Murphy and Brian Bogusevic.
Eric Jokisch gave up one run on three hits over six innings in Tennessee’s 2-1 win over Mississippi. The Smokies closed the first half 34-35, and in third place in the Southern League North Division. Jonathan Mota, Anthony Giansanti and Chad Noble each had two hits.
Dustin Geiger hit his eighth home run, but it was one of four hits by Daytona in a 9-2 loss to Clearwater. Zach Cates gave up four runs on five hits and five walks over four innings. Geiger’s homer was a two-run shot in the fourth.
* On Monday, Javy Baez was named Florida State League Player of the Week after going 4-for-13 with three walks, four home runs and seven RBIs. The home runs and RBIs all came in the June 10 game against Fort Myers. He also hit two doubles in the All-Star Game Saturday.
Kane County had Monday off for the All-Star break. Six Cougars were named to the West Division All-Star team: Dan Vogelbach, Rock Shoulders, Bijan Rademacher, Tayler Scott, Felix Pena, and Nathan Dorris.
Duane Underwood gave up three runs over 3 2/3 innings in Boise’s 8-6 loss to Salem-Keizer. Jacob Rogers and Yasiel Balaguert each had two hits. Balaguert had three RBIs.
Mesa begins the Rookie League on Thursday.
Dave Sappelt had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs, in Iowa’s 9-8, 12-inning loss to Oklahoma City. Steve Clevenger was 2-for-5 with a double and one RBIs in the eighth game of his rehab assignment.
Rubi Silva had two hits and Alberto Cabrera gave up two runs over seven innings in Tennessee’s 3-2 loss to Mississippi.
Dustin Geiger and Tim Saunders each had two hits in Daytona’s 5-1 win over Fort Myers.
Tayler Scott gave up one run on two hits over 7 2/3 innings in Kane County’s 4-1 win over Burlington. Albert Almora had three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in three runs. Almora was batting .430.
Brad Nelson, Ian Stewart and Brian Bogusevic each homered to help Iowa post a 10-2 win over New Orleans, snapping a six-game losing streak. Brooks Raley started but had to leave after 3 1/3 innings when he was hit by a line drive. Logan Watkins had three hits. Steve Clevenger was 2-for-4 with a double in his second rehab game.
* Junior Lake was expected to join the Iowa Cubs Thursday. He’s been rehabbing at the Cubs’ facility in Mesa, Ariz., from a rib injury suffered in Spring Training.
Ronald Torreyes hit his second homer and Ty Wright belted his third in Tennessee’s 8-6 win over Jackson. Matt Szczur had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs. Chad Noble had four hits and one RBIs.
Ben Wells threw five shutout innings, giving up two hits, in Daytona’s 1-0 win over Bradenton. John Andreoli and Tim Saunders each had two hits. Andreoli, Jorge Soler, Javier Baez and Dustin Geiger were all named to the Florida State League’s first half North All-Star team. Baez and Soler bought pizzas for the Daytona team after Tuesday’s game to celebrate. Baez also was invited to take part in the All-Star home run derby, and agreed. The Florida State League All-Star game will be played June 15 in Dunedin, Fla.
Kane County had Tuesday off, and returns to action Wednesday against Burlington.
Class A Daytona infielder Dustin Geiger and Double-A Tennessee pitcher Kyle Hendricks were named the Cubs’ Minor League player and pitcher of the month for May, respectively. Geiger, 21, batted .307 with eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 23 RBIs in 27 May contests. He drew 11 walks that contributed to a .368 on-base percentage, and recorded a .495 slugging mark. His 23 RBIs ranked tied for third-most in the Florida State League. He was named the league’s Player of the Week for May 13-19, hitting .469 (15-for-32) with seven doubles, a triple, two home runs and seven RBIs in eight games.
Hendricks, 23, went 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA in five May starts for the Smokies, striking out 25 amd walking five. He gave up one home run in 32 1/3 innings pitched and limited the opposition to a .230 batting average. His four May victories tied for the Southern League lead while his 1.02 WHIP ranked tied for fifth and his 1.95 ERA was seventh. Acquired from Texas with infielder Christian Villanueva for pitcher Ryan Dempster on July 31 last season, Hendricks is 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA in 10 starts for Tennessee this year, his first at Double-A.
Matt Garza picked up the win Thursday in Iowa’s 1-0 victory over Tucson. Donnie Murphy drove in the only run with a sacrifice fly in the second. Brooks Raley gave up two hits over three innings in relief for the save.
Ty Wright hit two home runs and drove in four runs to power Tennesseeto a 6-4 victory over Jackson. Arismendy Alcantara, Jonathan Mota and Rafael Lopez each had two hits. A.J. Morris picked up the win in relief.
Dustin Geiger went 3-for-5 and hit his fourth home run but it wasn’t enough as Daytona lost, 12-7, to Charlotte. P.J. Francescon gave up 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits and five walks over five innings. Geiger now has 30 RBIs, tops on the team.
Kane County scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to beat Peoria, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. Gioskar Amaya and Marco Hernandez each had three hits, and Amaya drove in three runs. In the second game, Hernandez hit his first home run but Peoria scored six in the third to win, 6-2. Jeimer Candelario had two hits, both doubles. Kane County committed six errors in the second game.
Barret Loux gave up seven runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings in Iowa’s 11-1 loss to Reno. Brad Nelson and Brian Bogusevic each had two hits. Ian Stewart was 1-for-3 with a double.
Christian Villanueva hit a solo home run to help Tennessee beat Jackson, 3-2, in 10 innings. Zach Rosscup picked up the win in relief. Matt Szczur collected his sixth straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-5.
Dustin Geiger hit a double for the only extra base hit as Daytona lost, 4-2, to Charlotte. Austin Reed threw two scoreless innings in relief, and now has not given up a run in his last five appearances.
Wilson Contreras went 2-for-2, hitting his fifth home run, in Kane County’s 8-4 loss to Peoria. Ian Dickson gave up two runs on five hits over four innings. Rock Shoulders notched his eighth multi-RBI game, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Barret Loux threw five shutout innings in a 5-0 victory over Nashville on Friday. Logan Watkins had two hits and Ian Stewart was 0-for-2 with two walks in his third rehab start.
Arismendy Alcantara had two hits and two RBIs in Tennessee’s 8-1 win over Huntsville. Matt Szczur had two hits, including a triple, and scored two runs. Christian Villanueva had two RBIs, and now has 12 in his last 13 games. A.J. Morris picked up the win in relief.
Dustin Geiger extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a fifth inning single in Daytona’s 8-3 loss to Tampa. Jorge Soler was 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Zach Cates took the loss, giving up six runs on three hits and three walks in two-thirds of an inning.
Kane County’s game vs. Quad Cities was postponed because of the weather.
Brooks Raley gave up two runs over seven innings and struck out seven in Iowa’s 2-0 loss to Round Rock on Thursday. Brett Jackson had a hit and stolen base, and was batting .258 for the season.
Tennessee lost, 6-3, Thursday to Chattanooga. Christian Villanueva hit a RBI double in the second, and scored on a single by Jair Fernandez in the fourth. Alberto Cabrera took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out five over six innings. The two teams will play the third game of their five-game series on Friday at Smokies Park. Eric Jokisch gets the start for Tennessee.
Daytona pitchers served up 15 hits, including four home runs, in a 12-2 loss to Clearwater. Starling Peralta gave up six of those runs over six innings. Stephen Bruno, Chad Noble, Dustin Geiger and Taiwan Easterling each had two hits for Daytona.
Kane County’s game against Wisconsin was postponed because of rain. The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday.

Chris Rusin struck out seven and gave up three runs over seven innings but took the loss in Iowa’s 4-3 loss to Oklahoma City on Sunday in the last home game of the season. James Adduci had two hits, and Blake Lalli was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. It was Rusin’s 11th quality start. The Iowa Cubs travel to Nashville Monday.
Jae-Hoon Ha hit a RBI triple in the eighth to help Tennessee beat Mobile, 4-3. Ha was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and one RBIs. Eric Jokisch posted a quality start, giving up three runs over seven innings. Trey McNutt got the win, throwing two innings in relief.
Daytona was off Sunday, and plays host to Clearwater on Monday.
Jeffry Antigua threw seven shutout innings in Peoria’s 10-3 win over Wisconsin. Jacob Rogers hit his first home run, Jorge Soler had two hits and two RBIs, and Dustin Geiger had three hits and three RBIs. Antigua struck out seven and did not walk a batter. He’s 2-2 with a 1.53 ERA.
Jeimer Candelario and Darien Martin each had two hits in Boise’s 5-1 loss to Vancouver. Felix Pena took the loss, giving up four runs over 4 1/3 innings.
Duane Underwood gave up two hits over 2 1/3 scoreless innings in Mesa’s 5-2 win over the Athletics. Ben Carhart and Trevor Gretzky each had three hits. Juan Paniagua picked up the win in relief.

Adrian Cardenas hit his third home run in Iowa’s 5-3 win over Oklahoma City on Friday. Cardenas connected in the eighth, and finished with two RBIs. Tony Campana was 2-for-4 with a triple and one RBI. Jay Jackson picked up the win in relief.
Junior Lake, Rubi Silva and Matt Szczur each homered in Tennessee’s 11-5 win over Mobile. Dallas Beeler picked up the win, giving up five runs over five innings. Lake’s homer was his ninth and he’s now batting .280. He connected in the third for a three-run blast and Silva followed with his first of the year.
Elieser Bonne hit a three-run homer in the fifth to help Daytona beat Tampa, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader. Christian Villanueva hit a solo shot in the sixth to back Kyle Hendricks, who gave up two runs over five innings. In the second game, Tampa beat Daytona, 11-5, collecting eight runs off starter Matt Loosen in 3 1/3 innings. Villanueva was 2-for-3 with a double.
Dustin Geiger hit his 17th home run but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost, 8-2, to Beloit. Geiger finished with two hits and two RBIs. Chadd Krist had two hits and Austin Reed pitched one inning of scoreless relief.
Tayler Scott gave up five runs over five innings in Boise’s 7-6 loss to Vancouver. Marco Hernandez had three hits.
