The Cubs placed right-handed pitcher Matt Guerrier and outfielder Thomas Neal on the disabled list Thursday, and added catcher J.C. Boscan and right-handed reliever Eduardo Sanchez to the roster from Triple-A Iowa. Guerrier was experiencing discomfort in his right elbow, and returned to Chicago on Thursday to be examined. Neal, claimed Monday off waivers from the Yankees, suffered a dislocated right shoulder making a throw Wednesday. Both injuries came in the seventh, when catcher Dioner Navarro injured his right ankle in a collision at home plate. Navarro, who had to be carted off the field, amazingly is not going on the DL. He has a right ankle contusion.
Boscan was batting .253 in 62 games at Iowa. He has not played since Sunday. Boscan, 33, has played in the Minors since 1997, and didn’t get called up to the big leagues until 2010, when he appeared in one game for the Braves. He’s been in 11 games total in the Majors from 2010-12, all with the Braves. Sanchez, claimed off waivers from the Cardinals on May 21, was with the Cubs earlier this month and appeared in two games before he was optioned to Triple-A Iowa. He had yet to pitch for the Minor League team since his return.
With Guerrier and Neal added to the disabled list, the Cubs now have 10 players on the DL: Guerrier, Neal, Brian Bogusevic, Luis Valbuena, Scott Baker, Rafael Dolis, Kyuji Fujikawa, Zach Putnam, Ryan Sweeney and Arodys Vizcaino. Only Bogusevic and Valbuena were currently on the 15-day DL.

The Cubs added outfielder Thomas Neal to the 25-man roster on Tuesday and optioned right-handed pitcher Eduardo Sanchez to Triple-A Iowa. Neal, who will wear uniform No. 54, will be available for the first game of a three-game set against the Phillies. Neal, 25, was claimed off waivers Monday from the Yankees. He batted .325 (86-for-265) with 17 doubles, two home runs and 29 RBI in 72 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre affiliate, turning in a .391 on-base percentage and a .411 slugging percentage, good for an .802 OPS.
He had his contract selected on June 14 and played in four games with the Yankees, batting .182 (2-for-11) in limited action. He was designated for assignment on Aug. 2.
Sanchez, 24, has no record and a 3.00 ERA (1 ER/3 IP) in three relief appearances for the Cubs. He was claimed off waivers from the Cardinals on May 21 and has combined to go 1-1 with one save and a 3.71 ERA (14 ER/34 IP) in 28 relief appearances between Triple-A Iowa and Triple-A Memphis.
The Cubs had been carrying an extra pitcher in the bullpen with Sanchez on the roster. With the addition of Neal, the Cubs now have five players on the bench, seven in the ‘pen.
The Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Eduardo Sanchez off waivers from the Cardinals. Sanchez, 24, will be assigned to Triple-A Iowa. He had one save and a 3.72 ERA in nine relief appearances for Triple-A Memphis, giving up four earned runs over 9 2/3 innings. He has spent part of the last two seasons in the big leagues with the Cardinals, combining to go 3-2 with five saves and a 3.40 ERA in 43 relief appearances. He has 48 strikeouts over 45 innings, and held opponents to a .166 batting average against. The right-hander made his Major League debut in 2011, and went 3-1 with five saves and a 1.80 ERA in 26 relief appearances.
