11/9 Cubs bid for Ryu – UPDATED

The Cubs’ bid for South Korean left-handed pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was apparently rejected. The winning bid was $25,737,737.33 by the Dodgers, according to’s Jon Heyman. The numbers three and seven are considered lucky in Korea, which explains the bid. The Cubs did bid aggressively, according to Heyman, but did not win Ryu’s rights.

Ryu, 25, is believed to be ready to be inserted into a big league rotation but could begin in a team’s bullpen. The Dodgers now have 30 days to negotiate a contract with Ryu’s agent, Scott Boras.

Ryu made his professional debut in 2006, and went 18-6 with a 2.23 ERA and 205 strikeouts in 201 2/3 innings that season, winning both Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors. He helped the South Korean national team win gold in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, beating Cuba in the championship game. This past season, he was 9-9 with a 2.66 ERA, 1.09 WHIP in 27 starts, striking out 210 over 182 2/3 innings.
