8/23 LIneup & update

Alfonso Soriano did not start Sunday because of a sore left knee that has been bothering him for a few days. It’ll be the “F Troop” lineup vs. the Dodgers – Fuld, Fukudome, Fox and Fontenot:

SS Theriot

CF Fuld

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

RF Fukudome

LF Fox

2B Fontenot

C Hill

P Dempster

The semi-shakeup of the lineup comes despite Lou Piniella saying before Sunday’s game that the Cubs need the veteran players to step up in the final 41 games.

* X-rays of Reed Johnson’s foot show it is not healing as quickly as hoped, and he most likely will not be available until early September.

8/19 Broadcast news

There’s a story Wednesday on MLB.com about players going from on the field to on camera and becoming broadcasters. Cubs television play by play man Len Kasper was asked who he thought could make a smooth transition to the booth.

“Ryan [Dempster] would be the obvious answer,” Kasper said. “I think he likes the camera, he likes the media. He’s very smart, very funny.

“The biggest thing for any player or recent former player is taking your player hat off and understanding you need to be a broadcaster,” he said. “I once heard the line from Mike Krukow, and I think it was Hank Greenwald who told him, ‘You have two choices — you’ll either be known as a former player or as a broadcaster.’ When you think about it, former players who become broadcasters, when it’s all said and done, most people remember them for their broadcasting careers as much as their playing careers. That’s a key distinction. When you do this job, you’re a broadcaster first, ex-player second, and I think my partner [Bob Brenly] embodies that. I think Ryan would jump right in.

“I think Carlos Marmol would be great,” Kasper said. “He has a great personality and loves the game. Every time I talk to him we have an interesting conversation on some nuance of the game. He asks me questions about what we have going on. Knowing him, he might be able to do it in English at some point. He’s gotten much better at his English.

“Jake Fox would be excellent,” Kasper said. “He’s really smart. The big thing for Jake is to slow down. He talks real fast. I think he’d be a natural.”

8/12 Sorry, Shane

Lou Piniella apologized Wednesday night to Shane Victorino and the Phillies for a fan who doused the center fielder with a beer as he caught Jake Fox’s sacrifice fly in the fifth. Left fielder Raul Ibanez pointed to the culprit after the incident, and a fan was ushered out of the ballpark.

“That shouldn’t happen,” Piniella said. “It’s not good sportsmanship and it’s not good behavior. We apologize to Victorino and the Phillies for that.”

Alfonso Soriano hoped the Phillies didn’t retaliate the next time he’s at Citizen’s Bank Park.

“If I play in Philadelphia and some fan does that to me, I’m not going to be happy,” Soriano said.

8/4 Soto update

Geovany Soto tuned up for his return by hitting a solo homer Tuesday night in his second rehab game for Double-A Tennessee. Soto went 1-for-3 in the Smokies game against Carolina. He struck out in the first, grounded out, and connected with one out in the fourth inning. Soto was then pulled.

Lou Piniella had talked about how he wanted Soto back on Wednesday, but will have to wait until Friday in Colorado.

“The feeling is he needs two more days,” Piniella said before Tuesday’s game. “He’ll join us in Colorado on Friday.”

Give Koyie Hill credit. The one Cubs player who has to be looking forward to Thursday’s off day the most hit two doubles in Tuesday’s 6-3 win over the Reds. He’s the first Cubs catcher to start 25 games in a row since Damon Berryhill did so May 13-June 9, 1989. Since Soto was sidelined on July 7, Hill has been behind the plate for 225 innings. Jake Fox has caught six innings since Soto was hurt.

8/4 Lineup & roster move

Infielder Andres Blanco was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf to make room on the 25-man roster for lefty Tom Gorzelanny, who will start Tuesday, weather permitting. It’s clearing up at Great American Ball Park, and they may even start on time.

Blanco tweaked his calf Saturday in Florida. The Cubs could be getting reinforcements for the bench with the addition of infielder Aaron Miles, who could join the team as early as Wednesday. He’s been playing for Triple-A Iowa, rehabbing from a hyperextended right elbow.

As for Geovany Soto, he won’t join the big league team until Friday in Colorado. The Cubs want him to play three games for Double-A Tennessee. He went 1-for-2 Monday.

Milton Bradley was getting a breather Tuesday, so Jake Fox was in right.
