8/12 Minor matters

Jay Jackson gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits over six innings in Iowa’s 5-4 loss to Portland. Marquez Smith hit his eighth homer but it wasn’t enough.

Rafael Dolis threw five scoreless innings in Tennessee’s 2-0 win over Huntsville. He struck out five. Brandon Guyer extended his hitting streak to 15 games and was batting .473 in that stretch.

Alberto Cabrera gave up two runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings in Daytona’s 6-3 win over Tampa. Cabrera struck out eight. DJ LeMahieu extended his hitting streak to 13 games with two hits and drove in four runs.

D.J. Fitzgerald hit his fifth homer but it wasn’t enough as Peoria lost, 7-4, to Beloit in 11 innings. … Juan Yasser Serrano gave up one run on three hits over five innings in Boise’s 4-3 win over Tri-City. …Austin Reed gave up six runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings in Mesa’s 14-4 loss to the Brewers.

8/7 Minor matters

Marquez Smith hit two home runs, including an inside the park homer, to lead Iowa to an 11-6  victory over Tacoma on Friday. Brad Snyder, Bryan LaHair and Micah Hoffpauir also homered for the Iowa Cubs. Smith’s inside the park homer was the first by an Iowa player since 1998. Jay Jackson gave up five runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings for the win. The game was played in front of 13,206 at Principal Park in Des Moines.

Rafael Dolis gave up one run on six hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 6-1 win over Montgomery. Brandon Guyer hit a double and drove in one run, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

Trey McNutt threw six shutout innings in Daytona’s 3-2 win over Jupiter. McNutt gave up three hits and struck out seven. Rebel Ridling hit his 11th homer, breaking a 2-2 tie in the eighth with the solo shot. He finished with three hits and two RBIs.

Jae-Hoon Ha hit his fifth home run to help Peoria beat Wisconsin, 3-1. Ha’s blast was a three-run shot in the sixth. He finished with two hits. Nicholas Struck picked up the win in relief.

Austin Kirk gave up three runs on seven hits over three innings in Boise’s 12-5 loss to Everett. Arismendy Alcantara hit his second homer.

Austin Reed gave up one run on three hits over four innings but did not get a decision in Mesa’s 7-6 win over the Athletics. Blair Springfield homered for Mesa.

8/2 Minor matters

Jay Jackson gae up four runs on six hits over six innings and struck out eight in Iowa’s 9-5 win over Oklahoma City. Brad Snyder hit two home runs, and now has 17 for the season. He finished with five RBIs. His 79 RBIs lead the team. Matt Camp had three hits.

Brandon Guyer and Matt Spencer each homered in Tennessee’s 6-4 win over West Tenn. Kyle Smit, whom the Cubs acquired Saturday from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot, Blake DeWitt deal, picked up the win, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Marcos Mateo got the save and was promoted to Triple-A Iowa.

Brett Wallach, the other Minor League pitcher whom the Cubs acquired in the deal, was scheduled to start Monday for Class A Peoria. The Chiefs scored nine runs in the first to beat Beloit, 10-7. Nick Struck earned the win in relief, throwing 4 1/3 innings.

Austin Kirk gave up one run on four hits over four innings and struck out seven in Boise’s 6-5 win over Vancouver. John Gaub gave up four runs (three earned) on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning for Mesa in a 9-7 loss to the Athletics.

7/28 Minor matters

Welington Castillo hit a grand slam, Brad Snyder had four RBIs and Micah Hoffpauir drove in three runs in Iowa’s 14-12 win over Albuquerque Tuesday. Sam Fuld scored four runs and Darwin Barney scored three in the slugfest. Jay Jackson picked up the win, giving up seven runs on eight hits over five innings.

Tennessee had the day off and opens a five-game homestand against West Tenn Wednesday.

Brooks Raley gave up three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings in Daytona’s 7-5 win over Palm Beach. Michael Brenly had a hit, and has reached base safely in 25 straight games. He’s gotten a hit in 24 of those games. DJ LeMahieu, Ryan Flaherty, Junior Lake and Rebel Ridling each had two hits.

Peoria had the day off and opens a three-game series against Wisconsin Wednesday. Boise faces Vancouver Wednesday. Vismeldy Bieneme had two hits in Mesa’s 3-0 win over the Padres.

7/28 Zambrano update

Carlos Zambrano gave up three runs on three hits in the seventh inning in the Iowa Cubs’ 14-12 win over Albuquerque Tuesday night. Zambrano, making his third appearance for Iowa, got the first batter to ground out but Jamie Hoffman singled and Big Z then hit A.J. Ellis with a pitch. Pinch-hitter Michael Restovich singled to load the bases and Zambrano walked Elian Herrera to force in a run. Trent Oeltjen struck out and Ivan DeJesus Jr. followed with a two-run single to close to 13-11. Russ Mitchell grounded out and end the inning. Zambrano threw 32 pitches, 20 for strikes.

Jay Jackson gave up seven runs on eight hits over five innings for the win. The Iowa Cubs scored six runs in the fifth. Welington Castillo hit a grand slam, Brad Snyder had four RBIs and Micah Hoffpauir drove in three runs, hitting one on his 16th homer.

Zambrano, on the restricted list, was expected to join the Cubs Friday in Denver.

7/18 Minor matters

Brad Snyder hit a pair of three-run homers to extend his hitting streak to 13 games and lead Iowa to a 9-4 win over Oklahoma City Saturday. Jay Jackson picked up the win, giving up one run on seven hits over five innings. He struck out six. Snyder was 3-for-4 and a season-high six RBIs. Welington Castillo also homered, his 10th.

Robinson Chirinos hit his 12th homer but it wasn’t enough as Tennessee lost 5-4 in 14 innings to Montgomery. Steve Clevenger had three hits.

Rebel Ridling hit his ninth homer and Mark Reed his first in Daytona’s 9-4 loss to Ft. Myers. Michael Brenly did get a hit to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

Robert Whitenack threw seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits, in Peoria’s 5-0 win over Bowling Green. Whitenack struck out four and did not walk a batter. Luis Flores hit his second homer.

Eduardo Figueroa gave up one run on six hits over five innings in Boise’s 10-3 win over Salem-Keizer. Boise totaled 18 hits in the game, including four by Arismendy Alcantara.

Sergio Burruel had two hits and three RBIs in Mesa’s 13-11 win over the Mariners. Jeff Gray, rehabbing from a groin injury, started and gave up one run on two hits over one inning. Austin Reed picked up the win, throwing three scoreless innings in relief.

7/11 Minor matters

Jay Jackson threw six scoreless innings, striking out five, in Iowa’s 4-2 win over New Orleans on Saturday. Jim Adduci and Darwin Barney each had two hits. Jackson now has given up three or fewer runs in five of his nine starts since returning to the rotation.

Chris Carpenter gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 11-3 win over Jacksonville. Carpenter struck out eight and now is 7-4 with a 3.19 ERA. Brandon Guyer had four hits, including two doubles. Blake Lalli homered in an eight-run fifth inning.

Michael Brenly extended his hitting streak to 11 games in Daytona’s 5-0 loss to Clearwater. Brenly is batting .463 in that stretch with five doubles and 13 RBIs. Brooks Raley took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits over six innings.

Ryan Searle gave up five runs on six hits over five innings in Peoria’s 6-5 loss to Cedar Rapids. Matt Cerda had three hits, including two doubles.

George Matheus had three hits in Boise’s 6-5, 10-inning win over Eugene. Vismeldy Bieneme had two hits in Mesa’s 9-0 loss to the Giants.

6/28 Minor matters

Brett Jackson didn’t waste any time. Jackson homered in his first game with Double-A Tennessee on Sunday, going 2-for-5 in the Smokies’ 10-3 loss to Carolina.

Jay Jackson, no relation to Brett, gave up two runs on six hits over six innings in Triple-A Iowa’s 9-2 win over New Orleans. Jackson struck out five. Welington Castillo hit his ninth homer and Micah Hoffpauir went 4-for-4 with a team-high four RBIs. Brad Snyder had three hits and Darwin Barney and Marquez Smith each had two hits.

Chris Archer gave up one run, unearned, on five hits over six innings and struck out six in Daytona’s 15-7 win over Brevard County. Archer is 7-1 with a 2.86 ERA. DJ LeMahieu had three hits, including his first homer. Michael Brenly had three hits and three RBIs.

Rob Whitenack gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits over five innings in Peoria’s 5-4 loss to Cedar Rapids. Mario Mercedes had four hits.

Arismendy Alcantara hit a solo homer in Boise’s 5-1 win over Eugene. Brandon May had two hits, including a double, and one RBI.

Casey Lambert gave up one run on three hits over two innings in Mesa’s 5-1 win over the Athletics.

6/18 Minor matters

Jay Jackson gave up six runs on eight hits over four innings in Iowa’s 6-5 loss to Round Rock. Welington Castillo hit his seventh home run, a two-run shot, and finished with three RBIs. James Russell threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up seven runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings as Tennessee lost 12-6 to Mobile. Marwin Gonzalez had three hits.

Rafael Dolis gave up three runs on four hits over five innings in Daytona’s 6-4 loss to Dunedin. An error by Junior Lake in the eighth led to Dunedin’s winning run. Kyler Burke and Rebel Ridling each had two hits.

Peoria had Thursday off and resumes play Friday against Quad Cities. The Boise Hawks open the season Friday at Yakima.

6/13 Minor matters

Jay Jackson gave up three runs on two hits and three walks over seven innings but took the loss in Iowa’s 6-2 loss to Memphis. Chris Robinson hit a solo homer and Darwin Barney had three hits. It was Jackson’s third consecutive quality start.

Craig Muschko gave up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings in Tennessee’s 7-5 loss to West Tenn. Blake Lalli had three hits and one RBI and Tony Thomas drove in two runs.

Ryan Searle threw five shutout innings, giving up two hits, in Peoria’s 6-3 win over Great Lakes. Searle struck out five. Justin Bour had four RBI and hit his fifth home run.
