9/27 Lou salutes new Central champs

The Cardinals celebrated as the National League Central champs with a win Saturday over the Rockies.

“They clinched — congratulations to them,” Lou Piniella said. “They had a good year.”

The Cardinals’ surged in August, getting contributions from the new guys added during the season.

“You add a [Mark] DeRosa, you add a [Matt] Holliday, you add a [Julio] Lugo, you add a [John] Smoltz — those are nice pieces to add to an already respectable baseball team,” Piniella said. “All of a sudden, you have to pitch to [Albert] Pujols a little more, you have another power bat at the corner in DeRosa. Lugo can get on base and add experience in big games, and then Smoltz, he’s been a big game pitcher. You saw what they did.”

9/18 Lilly vs. Smoltz

Ted Lilly deserved better Friday night. The lefty held the Cardinals to two runs over 7 2/3 innings, and didn’t walk a batter, the 10th time he’s had a walk-free start this year.

Lilly enjoyed competing against John Smoltz, one of the Cardinals’ late season pickups.

“His slider is still biting and it’s deep in the zone,” Lilly said of Smoltz. “I saw a few of them and I’m sure he didn’t give me his best one like he does the righties. His stuff is really good and he really knows what he’s doing out there. He’s definitely one of the guys, when I was a kid, who I really enjoyed watching. It would’ve been nice to knock him out of hte game early but at the same time, I enjoy watching him have success.”
