8/17 Lineup, Colvin & Lee

Lou Piniella is giving Tyler Colvin a breather — as well as a chance to work more with hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo — and started Kosuke Fukudome in right Tuesday night in Game 2 against the Padres. Colvin was batting .244 in the leadoff spot in 20 of the last 27 games. Derrek Lee (back) is expected back Thursday at the earliest. Here’s the lineup:

RF Fukudome
SS Castro
CF Byrd
3B Ramirez
1B Nady
LF Soriano
2B DeWitt
C Hill
P Wells

8/12 Part-time job

Kosuke Fukudome batted third on Thursday for the first time this season. Acting manager Alan Trammell wanted to break up the lefties in the Cubs lineup against Matt Cain. Fukudome hit third last season in 32 games, and batted .259. The outfielder has lost his starting job to Tyler Colvin but entered the game riding a five-game hitting streak.

“I don’t think anybody wants to accept [a part time role] but he sees it and to his credit he goes about his business and he’s ready,” Trammell said. “I’m sure he’s not happy about it but he’s professional and he’s ready to go. I’m sure Lou [Piniella] is aware of that and how much playing time he gets from here on out, I can’t tell you. I do have him in there today. He’s earned that and we’ll see where it goes.”

7/27 Rumors

There are at least a half dozen Major League scouts on hand at Minute Maid Park to watch Ted Lilly and the Astros’ Brett Myers. Lilly has drawn interest despite his 3-8 record because that mark is a reflection of the lack of run support. The lefty leads the Major Leagues in least amount of runs (2.43 per start). Through five innings Tuesday, he’s rarely topped 90 mph on the stadium radar gun but his curve has been sharp.

There are rumors that teams also are interested in Derrek Lee, who will be a free agent at season’s end like Lilly. However, the interest is limited. Lee is batting .352 in his last 16 games since July 6 with seven doubles, one homer and eight RBIs but he’s hitting .251 overall.

According to reports, the Cubs are offering Kosuke Fukudome and Carlos Zambrano to teams, but both have significant guaranteed money on their contracts. Fukudome is batting .253 and has been bumped by rookie Tyler Colvin. It’s uncertain how Big Z will do in his comeback from the restricted list.

Neither GM Jim Hendry nor assistant Randy Bush are in Houston, opting to stay in Chicago. The trading deadline is Saturday at 3 p.m. CT.

7/23 Lineup & Colvin

The Cubs have tried four different leadoff men this season and have yet to settle on the No. 1 guy. Ryan Theriot has been at the top of the order the most this season but lately Lou Piniella has leaned on rookie Tyler Colvin. On Friday, Colvin launched his first leadoff homer in his ninth start at No. 1. It’s the second leadoff blast by a Cubs player this season. Kosuke Fukudome also did so July 5 in Arizona.

“Colvin just has to learn the strike zone better — he chases pitches,” Piniella said prior to thes game. “That’s experience. [Starlin] Castro has done a nice job [batting second].”

Theriot’s on-base percentage has dropped. He does lead the team in stolen bases and having him bat eighth gives the Cubs some speed there. Theriot may be batting .276 but he only has 10 doubles in his 100 hits.

“What we’d like to see is for him to drive the ball a little bit and get a few more extra base hits,” Piniella said.

The next Cubs manager may want to put leadoff hitter at the top of his wish list.

“That’s something over the course of time that has to be addressed,” Piniella said. “The leadoff hitter sets the tone of the ballgame. If you have somebody who first of all can get on with a good on-base percentage and manufacture runs by stealing, it’s nice to have.”
