11/19 Roster moves

The Cubs selected the contracts of four players and added them to the 40-man roster: right-handed pitchers Chris Archer and Kyle Smit from Double-A Tennessee, outfielder Brandon Guyer from Tennessee; and right-handed pitcher Alberto Cabrera from Class A Daytona.  Archer was Chicago’s 2010 Minor League Pitcher of the Year and Guyer was Chicago’s 2010 Minor League Player of the Year.
 
Additionally, infielder Micah Hoffpauir has cleared unconditional release waivers and the rights to his contract were sold to the Nippon-Ham Fighters of Japan’s Pacific League. More on Hoffpauir in a few minutes.

11/18 AFL finale

Josh Vitters was 1-for-3 and Ryan Flaherty hitless in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 3-1 loss to the Peoria Saguaros in their Arizona Fall League season finale on Thursday. Vitters finished at .253 while Flaherty hit .268. Kyle Smit pitched one inning in relief, striking out one of the three batters he faced.

11/11 AFL update

Josh Vitters went 2-for-4, hitting a two-run double in the fifth, and Ryan Flaherty was 1-for-5 in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 9-6 loss Wednesday to Phoenix in Arizona Fall League play. Jake Muyco started and gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings. Chris Carpenter pitched 1 2/3 innings, and gave up two runs on three hits and one walk. Kyle Smit took the loss as he was charged with three runs on five hits over 1 1/3 innings. All the runs came in the eighth as Matt Wallach led off with a home run and Michael Taylor hit a two-run double. Smit, acquired from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly-Ryan Theriot-Blake DeWitt deal, had given up only three runs in 10 innings over seven outings prior to Wednesday’s game. On Thursday, the Solar Sox travel to Surprise.

11/5 AFL update

Kyle Smit was charged with a blown save but wound up with the win in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 7-4 victory Thursday over the Peoria Javelinas in Arizona Fall League play. Jake Muyco, who split the season between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa, started the game and gave up three runs on six hits and two walks over four innings. Chris Carpenter pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Smit entered the game in the seventh with a 4-3 lead. He gave up a leadoff single but got the next batter to hit into a double play. Cord Phelps then homered, his first, to tie the game at 4. The Solar Sox rallied with three runs in their half of the seventh. Chicago native David Cales, who played at Tennessee and Iowa this season, took over in the eighth for Smit (3-1, 2.70 ERA) and was credited with a hold. Smit was acquired from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly-Ryan Theriot-Blake DeWitt trade last July. The Solar Sox travel to Surprise Friday, and on Saturday, Carpenter and Josh Vitters were scheduled to play in the Rising Stars game.

10/31 AFL update

Cubs prospect Jake Muyco served up four runs on seven hits over four innings and took the loss in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 12-6 loss Saturday to Phoenix in Arizona Fall League Play. Muyco, a converted catcher, struck out four but also gave up two home runs, both to Cory Harrilchak, who connected in the second and the fourth. Chris Carpenter gave up four runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning and Kyle Smit was charged with one hit and one walk over 1 2/3 innings. Ryan Flaherty went 3-for-4 and Josh Vitters 2-for-5 with one RBI, hitting a RBI single in the eighth. The Solar Sox have Sunday off and return to action Monday, playing host to the Peoria Saguaros at HoHoKam Stadium.

10/28 AFL update

Brett Jackson hit a two-run single in a four-run fifth inning and stole a base in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 7-6 win over the Scottsdale Scorpions in Arizona Fall League action Wednesday. Jackson is the Cubs’ 2009 No. 1 Draft pick. Kyle Smit, acquired from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly-Ryan Theriot-Blake DeWitt deal, picked up the win in relief, getting three ground outs in the seventh. David Cales and Chris Carpenter, also Cubs prospects, pitched in the game. Both Cales and Carpenter pitched at Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. The Solar Sox play host to the Peoria Javelinas on Thursday at HoHoKam Stadium.

10/21 AFL update

Josh Vitters went 2-for-3 with a first inning double in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 6-3 loss to Scottsdale Scorpions Wednesday in Arizona Fall League play. Vitters started at third, and now is batting .308. Ryan Flaherty, another Cubs prospect, was hitless in four at-bats. Kyle Smit, whom the Cubs acquired from the Dodgers in the Ryan Theriot-Ted Lilly deal, took the loss, giving up two runs on two hits and four walks in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Smit got into trouble in the fifth. With one out, he walked two batters then gave up a single to A.J. Pollock to load the bases. Smit walked Conor Gillaspie to force in a run, and was lifted. Chris Carpenter, another Cubs prospect, replaced Smit and served up a RBI single to Jordan Pacheco to give Scottsdale a 3-1 lead. The two teams square off again Thursday in Mesa.

10/17 AFL update

Cubs prospect Josh Vitters drove in four runs, including three on his first homer, to help the Mesa Solar Sox beat Peoria Saguaros, 10-1, on Saturday in an Arizona Fall League game in Mesa. Vitters, who started at third, hit a three-run homer in a six-run fourth inning and added a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Cubs pitching prospect Kyle Smit picked up the win in relief, pitching two scoreless innings. The Solar Sox have Sunday off and resume play Monday against the Peoria Javelinas.

10/13 AFL update

Mesa Solar Sox manager Casey Kopitzke, who managed the Cubs’ Class A Peoria team, posted an 8-3 win on Tuesday over the Phoenix Desert Dogs and manager Don Mattingly in the Arizona Fall League opener. The Solar Sox, who have seven Cubs prospects on the roster, will face the Desert Dogs again Wednesday night at HoHoKam Park in Mesa (6:35 p.m. Arizona time).

The Cubs pitchers slated to go include Jake Muyco, a converted catcher; plus David Cales, Chris Carpenter and Kyle Smit, who was acquired from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly-Ryan Theriot-Blake DeWitt deal. Also, third baseman Josh Vitters, the Cubs’ No. 1 pick in 2007, may play. He missed most of the 2010 season because of a broken hand.

10/12 Arizona Fall League

The Mesa Solar Sox opened the Arizona Fall League season on Tuesday against the Phoenix Desert Dogs. None of the Cubs’ prospects were in the Sox’s starting lineup but on Wednesday night at HoHoKam Park, expect to see pitchers Jake Muyco, Chris Carpenter, Kyle Smith and David Cales all get some innings. Third baseman Josh Vitters, who missed most of the season because of a broken hand, also was expected to be in the lineup. Former Cubs catcher Casey Kopitzke is the Solar Sox manager.
