6/23 Minor matters

Brad Snyder drove in the winning run in the ninth to lift Iowa to an 8-7 win over Omaha. Jim Adduci and Micah Hoffpauir each homered for the I-Cubs. Brian Schlitter picked up the win in relief. Jeff Samardzija was scheduled to start Wednesday.

Russ Canzler homered to help Tennessee beat Carolina, 4-3, in the first game of the second half. Marwin Gonzalez had three hits.

Chris Archer gave up one run on four hits over 5 2/3 innings in Daytona’s 2-1 win over Lakeland in the first game of a doubleheader. Michael Brenly hit his third homer of the season. Daytona lost the nightcap, 6-4. Chris Rusin gave up four runs on six hits over four innings. Brett Jackson was named Florida State League offensive player of the week for June 14-20 after batting .429 with six doubles, two triples, a home run, seven RBIs and two stolen bases. He was selected to play for the U.S. team in the All-Star Futures Game July 11 in Anaheim.

Trey McNutt gave up three runs on three hits in one inning and took the loss in the East’s 6-2 win over the West in the Midwest League All-Star Game. Hak-Ju Lee went 1-for-2.

Alvaro Ramirez hit a two-run homer and Richard Jones hit a solo shot to help Boise beat Salem-Keizer, 6-2. Jeff Vigurs, taken in the 22nd round of the June Draft, had three hits.

The Mesa Cubs lost their season opener, 6-4, to the Angels. Casey Lambert gave up two hits over two innings and struck out three. Dustin Harrington, selected in the 34th round of the June Draft, had three hits and one RBIs.

6/19 Minor matters

J.R. Mathes gave up three runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings in Iowa’s 6-3 win over Albuquerque on Friday. The I-Cubs now are tied for first in the Northern Division. Brad Snyder was a home run shy of the cycle and Micah Hoffpauir had two hits.

Tennessee scored the go-ahead run on a balk in the ninth to beat Mobile, 3-2. Ty Wright had three hits and Tony Thomas had a RBI single in the sixth.

Brooks Raley threw six shutout innings to help Daytona beat Dunedin, 12-4. Raley struck out five. Michael Brenley hit his second homer of the season.

Ryan Searle gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits over six innings in Peoria’s 7-2 win over Quad Cities. Logan Watkins and Nelson Perez each had two hits.

6/16 Minor matters

Casey Coleman gave up one run on two hits over seven innings in Iowa’s 2-1 win over Round Rock Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader. Coleman struck out eight and got help from Bobby Scales, who hit a solo homer. In the second game, Jeff Samardzija threw five scoreless innings, striking out six, in a 4-0 win. Micah Hoffpauir had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Darwin Barney had two hits in both games.

Tennessee had Tuesday off and play at Mobile Wednesday.

Chris Archer gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings and struck out 10 in Daytona’s 5-4 win over Lakeland. Brett Jackson, Kyler Burke and Michael Brenly each had two hits.

Nick Struck gave up one run on four hits over five innings but took the loss in Peoria’s 2-0 loss to Burlington. Peoria had five players named to the Midwest League mid-season All-Star team, including Hak-Ju Lee, Matt Cerda, Logan Watkins, Trey McNutt and James Leverton.

6/14 Minor matters

J.R. Mathes threw six shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk and striking out four, in Iowa’s 4-0 win over Memphis on Sunday. It was Mathes’ best outing of the season and his seventh quality start. Micah Hoffpauir had two hits and one RBI and Welington Castillo hit a two-run double in the sixth.

Tony Thomas hit a grand slam in the seventh and finished with five RBIs to help Tennessee beat West Tenn, 7-5. Chris Carpenter gave up two runs on four hits over six innings but did not get a decision. Thomas has seven RBIs in his last two games, and has hit safely in 10 of 11 games.

Daytona has been off because of the Florida State League All-Star break and resumes play Monday against Lakeland.

Jeffry Antigua gave up four runs on seven hits over five innings in Peoria’s 7-0 loss to Great Lakes. The Chiefs play at Burlington Monday.

6/5 Minor matters

Casey Coleman gave up five runs on seven hits over five innings in Iowa’s 6-4 loss Friday to Round Rock. Micah Hoffpauir had two hits and was batting .571 in his last four games (8-for-14).

Hung-Wen Chen gave up two runs on seven hits over seven innings in Tennessee’s 3-2 win over Birmingham. Tony Campana had three hits and one RBIs.

Chris Rusin threw six shutout innings in Daytona’s 1-0, 12-inning loss to Charlotte. Brett Jackson had two hits, posting his 16th multi-hit game of the season.

Nick Struck gave up five runs on eight hits over four innings in Peoria’s 9-4 loss to West Michigan. Matt Cerda had three hits, including two doubles.

6/2 Minor matters

Jay Jackson gave up two runs on seven hits over six innings in Iowa’s 3-2 win over Round Rock on Tuesday. Jim Adduci and Micah Hoffpauir each homered. Hoffpauir had three hits, including a double. Jeff Samardzija picked up the win in relief, throwing two perfect innings.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx threw seven shutout innings, giving up one hit, in Tennessee’s 3-0 win over Birmingham. Marquez Smith homered and drove in two runs. For Bibens-Dirkx, it was his fourth straight win. He retired the last 13 batters he faced.

Dae-Eun Rhee gave up three runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings in Daytona’s 4-1 loss to Charlotte. Ryan Flaherty extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a double.

Peoria totaled 16 hits, yet lost, 6-5, in 10 innings to South Bend. Justin Bour had three hits, Hak-Ju Lee had two RBIs.

5/27 Cashner relief outing

Andrew Cashner pitched one inning in relief Thursday in the Iowa Cubs’ 8-5 loss to Salt Lake City. Cashner has been switched to the ‘pen temporarily to get accustomed to that role just in case he’s needed on the big league team. He gave up a double to the first batter he faced and that hitter eventually scored on an error by Micah Hoffpauir. Cashner gave up two more hits but struck out the last two batters to end the inning.

5/13 Minor matters

Andrew Cashner gave up one run on five hits and struck out six over six innings in his first start for Triple-A Iowa. Cashner got the win as the Iowa Cubs beat Las Vegas, 6-1. Micah Hoffpauir hit a three-run homer, his fifth of the season and second in as many games.

Chris Carpenter gave up one run on five hits over six innings and did not get a decision in Tennessee’s 6-5, 10-inning loss to Carolina. Josh Vitters extended his hitting streak to four games since being called up to the Double-A team. He’s batting .462 in the streak.

Smaily Borges hit his first home run to help Daytona beat Bradenton, 10-6. Rafael Dolis gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits over four innings. Michael Brenly extended his hitting streak to seven games and is batting .407 in that stretch.

Peoria lost its fifth straight as Nick Struck served up five runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings in a 5-4 loss to Clinton. D.J. Fitzgerald homered, his first, and was 3-for-3.

4/20 Minor matters

Jay Jackson threw eight shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out four, to help Triple-A Iowa beat Nashville, 4-0. Micah Hoffpauir and Jason Dubois each homered.

Andrew Cashner struck out five over seven innings, giving up two hits and one unearned run, but did not get a decision in Double-A Tennessee’s 2-1 win over Carolina. Starlin Castro had two hits, and has hit safely in six straight games. The Smokies are 9-2 and off to their best start since 2000.

Class A Daytona split a doubleheader with Dunedin, winning the first game, 4-2, and losing the nightcap by the same score. Rafael Dolis gave up two runs on four hits over five innings in the opener for the win. Brett Jackson went 4-for-7 in the two games, and had three RBIs. He’s batting .444 in his last nine games.

In case you missed it, Ted Lilly picked up the win for Class A Peoria, holding Burlington to three hits and one run over seven innings in the Chiefs’ 2-1 victory. Lilly struck out nine in his rehab start. Hak-Ju Lee has hit in six straight games and has four stolen bases.

4/17 Minor matters

Jason Dubois hit his fourth homer and Chris Robinson hit his first in Triple-A Iowa’s 7-4, 11-inning win Friday night over Nashville. Casey Coleman gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings but did not get a decision. Darwin Barney had his second multi-hit game. Micah Hoffpauir has hit in six straight games. John Gaub converted his second save.

Starlin Castro extended his hitting streak to four games in Double-A Tennessee’s 11-7 loss to Chattanooga. Tony Campana had three hits, including a double and a triple.

Aussie Ryan Searle gave up three runs on four hits over five innings as Daytona lost 8-4 to Tampa. Brett Jackson had two hits, and has hit in six straight games. He’s batting .458 in that stretch.

Trey McNutt gave up one run on four hits over six innings in Peoria’s 7-4 win over Cedar Rapids. Hak-Ju Lee has hit in three straight games, going 2-for-4 on Friday, scoring two runs and stealing a base.
