11/12 Purple reign at Wrigley

Wrigley Field’s fabled marquee will turn purple on Monday. The sign will be changed from red to purple to promote the Nov. 20 college football game between Northwestern and Illinois. The marquee was created by the Federated Sign Co., and was a blue-green color when it was installed for the 1934 season. It remained that color until it was painted red in the mid-1960s.
The game will be the first college football game at Wrigley since 1938, and kicks off at 2:30 p.m. CT.

It’s the first college football game at Wrigley since 1938 when DePaul played home games at the ballpark. It also will be the first football game of any kind at the Cubs’ home park since the Chicago Bears last played an NFL game there in December 1970.

Tickets will be available through the Northwestern ticket office. In order to purchase a ticket for the Nov. 20 contest, fans must purchase season tickets for Northwestern’s five home games at Ryan Field in Evanston, Ill. The field will run from the Cubs dugout to the right field bleachers. When the Chicago Bears called Wrigley home, the field ran from left field to the visitor’s dugout.

Northwestern and Illinois have played at Wrigley before. On Oct. 27, 1923, the two schools squared off at what was then called Cubs Park in front of 32,000 fans. The Nov. 20 game will mark the 104th game between the Big Ten rivals; they first played in 1892.

4/22 Wildcats vs. Illini at Wrigley

The Cubs and Northwestern University are expected to announce Friday that Northwestern and Illinois will play a Big Ten football game at Wrigley Field on Nov. 20. The ballpark, which has been the Cubs’ home since 1916, also was the home stadium for the Chicago Bears’ NFL team from 1921-70.

Officials from the Cubs, Northwestern and the Bears will hold a news conference Friday at Wrigley to announce the game.

When the Bears played at Wrigley, they added a portable bleacher section that spanned the right and center field areas and covered most of the existing bleacher seating. With the additional seating, Wrigley’s football capacity was around 46,000. The football field at that time ran north to south, so it went from left field to the foul side of first base.

Yankee Stadium will be the host site for the Notre Dame-Army game on the same date, Nov. 20, and also the host for a college football bowl game between the Big East Conference and the Big 12 Conference.
