6/4 Minor matters – Wednesday’s games

Joe Gardner retired 18 of the first 19 batters he faced and Dustin Geiger hit his seventh home run, a two-run shot, to lead Tennessee to a 4-1 win over Birmingham. Gardner gave up three hits over 6 2/3innings.

* Four Kane County players were named to the Midwest League All-Star Game, which will be played June 17 in Grand Rapids, Mich. They include catcher Will Remillard, infielder Jordan Hankins, pitcher Jose Arias and pitcher Paul Blackburn. Blackburn was named the Cubs’ Minor League pitcher of the month for May earlier Wednesday.

6/4 Bryant, Blackburn honored

The Cubs named Double-A Tennessee’s Kris Bryant and Class A Kane County’s Paul Blackburn the organization’s Minor League player and pitcher of the month for May, respectively.

Bryant, 22, led the Southern League with a .407 batting average, 30 runs, seven doubles, 12 home runs, 34 RBIs and 17 walks in 29 May games. He also led the league with an OPS of 1.298, including an on-base percentage of .492 and a slugging percentage of .806. The third baseman had multiple hits in 14 of 29 games, including a pair of four-hit games. Twice in the month he was named the league’s player of the week. The second overall pick in last year’s First-Year Player Draft, Bryant was named to the Southern League All-Star team on Tuesday.

Blackburn, 20, went 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA in five May starts for Kane County, walking five and striking out 26. He held opponents to one or no runs in four of his five outings. A sandwich round pick in the 2012 Draft, Blackburn is 5-1 with a 2.33 ERA, 43 strikeouts and 10 walks in 10 starts this season.

9/4 Minor matters

Tennessee begins the playoffs on Thursday, facing Birmingham in the best of five Southern League North Division Championship.

Corey Black threw five shutout innings and Kris Bryant delivered a two-run single to help Daytona beat Dunedin 6-1 in the first game of the best of three North Division playoff series. C.J. Edwards is scheduled to start Game 2 on Wednesday at Dunedin. Black, acquired from the Yankees in the Alfonso Soriano deal, struck out seven and walked one. Bryant had two hits, including his big single in a five-run sixth. Pin-Chieh Chen doubled in the first and scored on a wild pitch. Dan Vogelbach also had an RBI.

Paul Blackburn threw seven shutout innings in Boise’s 3-0 win over Salem-Keizer in the first game of the Northwest League playoffs. Game 2 of the best of three series is Wednesday. Kevin Encarnacion had three hits and scored two runs, and Yasiel Balaguert had three hits and two RBIs.

6/16 Minor matters

Saturday’s games

Steve Clevenger went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to help Iowa beat Omaha, 9-5, in the completion of Friday’s suspended game. Brooks Raley started but did not get a decision, giving up five runs over five innings. Brad Nelson drove in two runs.

Clevenger went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs in the regular game Saturday, helping Iowa beat Omaha, 8-7. Clevenger now is batting .417, and has hit safely in nine of his 10 games. Donnie Murphy also hit a two-out grand slam in the sixth. Junior Lake had two hits and two stolen bases. Barret Loux picked up the win, throwing three innings in relief.

Kyle Hendricks gave up one run on eight hits over seven innings in Tennessee’s 5-2 win over Mississippi. Jonathan Mota hit his fifth home run and drove in two runs. Arismendy Alcantara had two hits, both doubles, and two RBIs.

The Florida State League South All-Star team defeated the North, 8-1. Javier Baez was 2-for-4 with two doubles for the North team. John Andreoli had an RBIs. Daytona returns to action Monday against Clearwater.

Bijan Rademacher had three hits, including his second home run, in Kane County’s 11-5 loss to Wisconsin. Albert Almora had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 13 games. He’s batting .411 in the streak.

Paul Blackburn threw five shutout innings but Henry Charles hit a pinch-hit walkoff homer in the ninth to lead Eugene to a 1-0 win over Boise. Blackburn struck out eight, retiring the last 13 batters he faced. Shawn Dunston, Kevin Encarnacion and Jose Dore each had a hit.

6/16 Cubs sign 15 picks

The Cubs have signed 15 players selected in the First-Year Player Draft, including right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn out of Heritage High School in Brentwood, Calif., who was selected in the supplemental round, 56th overall. In addition, the Cubs signed right-handed pitcher Josh Conway (fourth round) of Coastal Carolina University; infielder Stephen Bruno (seventh round) of the University of Virginia; left-handed pitcher Michael Heesch (eighth round) out of the University of South Carolina Beaufort; and catcher Chadd Krist (ninth round) out of the University of California, Berkeley.

Others to sign include outfielder Rashard Crawford (11th round); right-handed pitcher Corbin Hoffner (14th round); catcher Carlos Escobar (15th round); left-handed pitcher Nathan Dorris (17th round); and right-handed pitcher Stephen Perakslis  (21st round). The list of signees also includes 28th-round pick Lance Rymel; 30th round pick Izaac Garsez; 32nd round selection Timothy Saunders; 35th round pick Ben Carhart; and 40th round pick Jacob Rogers.
