7/1 Minor matters

Iowa shortstop Darwin Barney and pitcher Thomas Diamond were named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team. Barney leads the league in games played at shortstop and has a .971 fielding percentage. He was batting .289. Diamond was 5-2 with a 2.53 ERA.

Chris Carpenter gave up five hits over five scoreless innings in Tennessee’s 10-3 win over West Tenn Wednesday. Robinson Chirinos hit his eighth homer and drove in three runs and Brandon Guyer had four hits. Brett Jackson had three hits and three RBIs. Tony Campana and Josh Vitters each had two hits.

Campana, Chirinos and Blake Lalli were named to the starting lineup for the Southern League North Division All-Star team. The lineup is subject to change. The three Smokies will join teammates Austin Bibens-Dirkx, Ryan Buchter, David Cales, Hung-Wen Chen and Steve Clevenger on the North Division roster. The game will be played July 12.

Michael Brenly hit his fourth home run in Daytona’s 5-3 loss to Brevard County. Brenley had three hits and has hit safely in seven of his last eight games.

Ryan Searle gave up four runs — two earned — on four hits over five innings in Peoria’s 5-4 loss to Burlington. Matt Cerda and Greg Rohan each had two hits.

Pierre LePage had his third consecutive multi-hit game in Boise’s 7-3 loss to Eugene. In Arizona, Hector Mayora threw four scoreless innings, giving up two hits, in Mesa’s 4-0 loss to the Angels.

5/23 Minor matters & Cashner

Andrew Cashner threw seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out seven, to help Iowa beat Colorado Springs, 1-0, on Saturday. Cashner retired the first 13 batters he faced and only three reached base (two hits, one hit batter). The seven innings were a career high. He did not walk a batter. The Cubs’ No. 1 Draft pick in 2008, Cashner now has a 0.95 ERA in three Triple-A starts.

Chris Carpenter gave up three runs on seven hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 10-8 win over Jacksonville. Ty Wright hit a three-run homer with two outs in the second and now has 41 RBIs, tied for first in the Southern League. Robinson Chirinos was 4-for-4.

Rafael Dolis threw 5 1/3 shutout innings in Daytona’s 6-1 win over Fort Myers. Dolis scattered six hits and struck out six. Rebel Ridling extended his hitting streak to seven games and was batting .423 in that stretch.

Hak-Ju Lee had three hits in Peoria’s 4-3 loss to Quad Cities. Greg Rohan also had three hits and two RBIs. Jeffry Antigua gave up four runs on six hits over four innings and took the loss.

5/1 Minor matters

Nick Struck threw five shutout innings for the seventh no-hitter in Peoria’s history in a 4-0, rain-shortened win over Clinton Friday night. Struck struck out five and walked one. He picked off the only runner who reached base.

J.R. Mathes gave up three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings in Iowa’s 3-1 loss to Omaha. Jim Adduci had a hit, nad has hit safely in six of his last seven games.

Chris Carpenter gave up one run on four hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 8-4 win over Chattanooga. Matt Spencer homered, Robinson Chirinos had his seventh multi-hit game and Tony Campana extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Josh Vitters had four hits in Daytona’s 4-3 loss to Clearwater. Dae-Eun Rhee gave up four runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. Brett Jackson reached base four times, going 3-for-4.

4/29 Minor matters

Blake Lalli drove in two runs and Robinson Chirinos posted his fifth multi-hit game of the year but it wasn’t enough as Tennessee lost, 6-5, to Birmingham on Wednesday. Russ Canzler extended his hitting streak to five games, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Brett Jackson had two hits, including a triple, in Daytona’s 5-3 loss to Lakeland. DJ LeMahieu had two RBIs. Rebel Ridling, playing his second game with the Daytona team, hit a RBI double.

Peoria scored three runs in the sixth to beat Wisconsin, 4-2. Richard Jones had two hits and two RBIs. The Chiefs are 8-0 at home, tying the 2003 team for the best start in O’Brien Field history.

Iowa had Wednesday off and will face Omaha Thursday night.

4/18 Minor matters

Mike Parisi gave up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits over four innings in Triple-A Iowa’s 7-1 loss to Nashville on Saturday. … Hung-Wen Chen gave up one run on six hits over seven innings to help Tennessee beat Chattanooga, 8-6. … Robinson Chirinos hit his third home run and drove in three. Daytona collected 13 hits to beat Tampa, 9-0. Starter Brooks Raley struck out seven over 4 2/3 shutout innings. Josh Vitters had three hits, including two doubles. … Logan Watkins had three hits to help Peoria beat Burlington, 7-6, in the Chiefs’ home opener. Su-Min Jung gave up five runs, none earned, on three hits over five innings.

3/26 Roster moves

The Cubs sent seven players to the Minor League camp on Friday to reduce the spring roster to 33 players. Right-handed pitchers Jeff Gray and Marcos Mateo, lefty John Gaub and outfielder Jim Adduci were optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Infielders Darwin Barney and Bobby Scales and catcher Robinson Chirinos were assigned to the Minor League camp.

The roster is now at 33, including 15 pitchers, three catchers, nine infielders, and six outfielders. Both Ted Lilly and Angel Guzman will open the season on the disabled list.

1/8/10 Winter ball update

Brad Snyder went 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs for Mexicali, but it wasn’t enough as the Mexican Winter League team lost, 14-9, to Obregon and was eliminated in the playoffs. Snyder, expected in the Cubs’ camp this spring as a non-roster invitee, hit a two-run shot in the second inning and a grand slam in the third. Erubiel Durazo homered and drove in three runs to power Obregon, which won the series, 4-1. Shortstop Matt Camp, another Cubs prospect, went 1-for-5 for Mexicali in the game.

In Venezuela, Robinson Chirinos had one hit in Magallanes’ 9-4 loss to Margarita in the Winter League playoffs. Chirinos was batting .304 in the playoffs; the catcher hit .366 in the Venezuelan team’s regular season.

12/22 Winter ball update

Cubs prospect Robinson Chirinos has been on fire in Venezuela. On Friday, he went 4-for-4, hitting a home run and driving in two runs, to help Magallanes beat Caribes, 7-4, in the Venezuelan Winter League. The catcher followed that with a 1-for-3 game on Sunday. He’s batting .359 in 46 games with 10 doubles, nine homers and 32 RBIs.

Andres Blanco played 37 games with Magallanes, and hit .291 with 11 doubles, two triples, two homers and 27 RBIs. He played primarily at second base and hit second in the order.

Sam Fuld played in six games for Aragua in Venezuela, and batted .241 with two doubles, two triples and five RBIs.

In the Mexican League, Jeff Stevens struck out one in one inning of relief Sunday for Mexicali. Stevens has appeared in 16 games for the Mexican League team, and has a 0-4 record, two saves and a 4.15 ERA. He’s walked nine over 17 1/3 innings and struck out 12. The right-hander is holding batters to a .212 average.

Infielder Junior Lake, who batted .248 for Class A Peoria this season, was 7-for-16 in four games with Estrellas in the Dominican League.

Outfielder Jim Adduci appears to have finished his Winter League assignment. He played in 20 games for Hermosillo and batted .224 with two homers and seven RBIs. Infielder Matt Camp batted .333 in 56 games for Mexicali. He hit 18 doubles, two triples, and two homers.

12/14 Winter ball update

Brad Snyder went 2-for-4, including a triple, and drove in two runs for Mexicali on Sunday. The outfielder was batting .380 with eight homers and 47 RBIs in 52 games in the Mexican League. Snyder batted .278 at Triple-A Iowa this season.

Matt Camp went 1-for-5 and was batting .336 in 53 games. Jeff Stevens walked two and gave up two runs in one-third of an inning for Mexicali. In 12 games, the right-hander has a 4.61 ERA. He has walked eight and given up nine hits over 13 2/3 innings. Jim Adduci was playing for Hermosillo, and batting .224 in 20 games.

In Venezuela, catcher Robinson Chirinos went 2-for-4 Sunday for Magallanes. He was batting .338 in 43 games with eight homers and 26 RBIs. The Cubs were worried they would lose Chirinos in the Rule 5 Draft.

Andres Blanco has apparently finished his Winter Ball stint, batting .294 in 35 games for Magallanes. His last game was Dec. 4.

12/3 Winter ball update

Brad Snyder had two hits and Jeff Stevens picked up his second straight save in Mexicali’s 4-1 win over Culiacan on Wednesday. Snyder, who was claimed off waivers from Cleveland in September 2008, is batting .373 in 42 games in the Mexican Winter League with 36 RBIs. At Triple-A Iowa this year, he batted .278 with 14 homers and 44 RBIs in 69 games.

In Venezuela, Robinson Chirinos hit a two-run homer in Magallanes’ 8-7 loss to Margarita. Chirinos now has seven homers and 23 RBIs in 35 games.

In the Dominican Republic, Jake Fox went 1-for-4 in Licey’s 4-3 win over Gigantes. Fox went hitless for the first time on Tuesday, and now is batting .296 in seven games.
