8/5 Minor matters

The Cubs have signed sixth-round pick Brooks Raley for $750,000. The Texas A&M left-hander was at Wrigley Field recently to throw a bullpen for Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Raley received $600,000 above the maximum the commissioner’s office recommends for all picks after the fifth-round. A two-way player in college, he was projected as a possible supplemental first-round pick.

* Josh Vitters, the Cubs’ first-round pick in the 2007 Draft, has not played since July 27 because of a sore wrist, which has been bothering him since he was hit by a pitch. * The Cubs are waiting to see what sentencing will be issued for Julio Castillo, the Minor League pitcher convicted of one charge of felonious assault. Castillo was accused of hurling a ball into the stands with the intent of causing injury during a brawl. The verdict was handed down Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio, by Montgomery County Common Pleas Court Judge Connie Price. Castillo, 22, was acquitted of a second charge of felonious assault with a deadly weapon.

The charge is punishable by up to eight years in prison, although Castillo could be eligible for probation. Price set the sentencing for Aug. 6.

Castillo was pitching for Class A Peoria on July 24, 2008, at Fifth Third Field when a brawl started on the field. He ran off the mound, then threw a baseball toward the Dayton Dragons’ dugout. The ball went high and struck spectator Christopher McCarthy, 25, of Middletown, and he suffered a concussion.
