6/30 Minor matters

Nick Struck gave up three runs over six innings in Iowa’s 8-5 victory over Omaha. Logan Watkins had two hits, including his eighth home run, and one RBIs, and Ty Wright hit a home run, a two-run shot in the eighth.

Eric Jokisch threw 6 1/3 shutout innings in Tennessee’s 13-0 win over Montgomery. Jokisch struck out seven and scattered three hits. Rubi Silva provided the offense, hitting a grand slam in the third. He also hit a double, and finished with a season-high five RBIs. Arismendy Alcantara had two hits and two RBIs. In his first game with the Smokies, John Andreoli had three hits and two RBIs.

Pierce Johnson gave up three runs over five innings in Daytona’s 3-2 loss to Clearwater.

Dan Vogelbach hit his 12th home run and drove in two runs in Kane County’s 10-9, 11-inning loss to Wisconsin. Reggie Golden and Gioskar Amaya each had three hits.

Yaseil Balaguert hit his third home run and Shawon Dunston and David Bote each had two hits in Boise’s 8-6 win over Eugene.

Zak Blair had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs in Mesa’s 8-6 win over the Athletics. Jesse Hodges had three hits, and Victor Garcia picked up the win in relief.

6/14 Minor matters

Thursday’s games

Dave Sappelt had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs, in Iowa’s 9-8, 12-inning loss to Oklahoma City. Steve Clevenger was 2-for-5 with a double and one RBIs in the eighth game of his rehab assignment.

Rubi Silva had two hits and Alberto Cabrera gave up two runs over seven innings in Tennessee’s 3-2 loss to Mississippi.

Dustin Geiger and Tim Saunders each had two hits in Daytona’s 5-1 win over Fort Myers.

Tayler Scott gave up one run on two hits over 7 2/3 innings in Kane County’s 4-1 win over Burlington. Albert Almora had three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove in three runs. Almora was batting .430.

5/9 Minor matters

Brian Bogusevic had two hits, including his second home run, to help Iowa beat Colorado Spring, 8-6, on Wednesday. Alberto Gonzalez had four hits and Brad Nelson had three hits, including two doubles. J.C. Boscan also had three hits and drew a walk. Blake Parker converted his fourth save.

* Outfielder Brett Jackson, who had been sidelined with turf toe, was activated from Iowa’s disabled list and infielder Edwin Maysonet placed on the DL with a sprained right ankle.

Tim Torres and Rubi Silva each homered in Tennessee’s 12-11, 14-inning loss to Birmingham. Rafael Lopez was 3-for-5, and Matt Szczur, Arismendy Alcantara, Silva and Torres each had two hits. Kyuji Fujikawa gave up one hit over two scoreless innings in his rehab outing. He threw 16 pitches, 10 for strikes.

Jorge Soler had three hits, including his fifth home run and two doubles, but it wasn’t enough as Daytona lost, 6-5, in 10 innings to St. Lucie. Austin Kirk started, and gave up five runs on nine hits over five innings.

Pierce Johnson gave up four runs on five hits over four innings in Kane County’s 4-0 loss to Burlington. Bijan Rademacher had two hits, and now has hit safely in six straight games.

11/16 AFL final update

The Mesa Solar Sox ended the Arizona Fall League season on Thursday with an 8-3 loss to Phoenix. Cubs prospect Matt Szczur was 0-for-4, and finished his AFL stint batting .264. Logan Watkins, a late add to take Javier Baez’s place on the roster, batted .219 in nine games, and Rubi Silva batted .206 in 20 games. Among the Cubs pitching prospects who took part, Dae-Eun Rhee posted a 6.27 ERA in six games, giving up 13 earned runs over 18 2/3 innings in six starts. Nick Struck, the Cubs’ Minor League pitcher of the year, compiled a 5.51 ERA in 12 appearances, giving up 10 earned runs on 12 hits and 12 walks over 16 1/3 innings. Kevin Rhoderick served up five runs on seven hits and struck out 14 over 9 1/3 innings. Tony Zych posted a 3.86 ERA in 13 games, giving up 18 hits and walking two over 14 innings. Peoria and Salt River will play for the AFL championship on Saturday at Scottsdale Stadium.

11/14 AFL update

Rubi Silva had two hits, Matt Szczur scored two runs and was 1-for-4 and Logan Watkins scored another run but it wasn’t enough as the Mesa Solar Sox lost 10-8 to Surprise in Arizona Fall League play on Tuesday. Silva and Szczur each hit RBI singles in the loss. On Wednesday, Mesa travels to Scottsdale for a night game. First pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. MT.

10/30 AFL update

Dae-Eun Rhee gave up three runs on two hits and three walks over three innings in Mesa’s 7-2 loss to Surprise on Monday in Arizona Fall League play. Cubs prospect Rubi Silva was 1-for-4, but struck out three times. Mesa travels to Phoenix on Tuesday.

10/25 AFL update

Cubs prospect Kevin Rhoderick served up a three-run home run with one out in the ninth as Scottsdale rallied to beat the Mesa Solar Sox, 4-3, in Arizona Fall League play Wednesday. Matt Szczur and Rubi Silva both started, and each had one hit for Mesa. On Thursday, Mesa plays host to Peoria at HoHoKam Park, first pitch 12:35 p.m. MT.

10/14 AFL update

Javier Baez hit a three-run homer, his second in the Arizona Fall League, to help the Mesa Solar Sox beat Phoenix, 8-3, on Saturday. Baez is batting .294 in the AFL. Rubi Silva was 2-for-5 and scored two runs. Tony Zych pitched the ninth. He has given up one hit over 2 1/3 scoreless innings in three outings, striking out two. The Solar Sox have Sunday off, then return to action Monday, playing host to Peoria at HoHoKam Stadium at 12:35 p.m. MT.

9/1 Minor League report

Iowa’s final series at New Orleans was cancelled because of Hurricane Isaac. The Iowa team finished 53-87.

Rubi Silva drove in four runs to power Tennessee to a 5-0 win over Pensacola on Friday night. Silva was 2-for-4 with his second home run. Chris Rusin, who will start for the Cubs on Tuesday against the Nationals, tuned up by throwing three innings. He did not give up a hit or a run, and struck out one.

Rebel Ridling had four hits, including a game-tying home run in the seventh and RBI double with two outs in the ninth, to lift Daytona to a 4-3 win over Brevard County. Kyler Burke started, and gave up three runs over four innings.

Peoria’s final game against Cedar Rapids Friday was rained out. The Chiefs close their season with a three-game series in Kane County, starting Saturday. Jeffrey Antigua was scheduled to start for Peoria.

Felix Pena threw five shutout innings but it wasn’t enough as Boise los, 6-4, to Everett. Stephen Bruno extended his hitting streak to 21 games, going 2-for-4.

Mesa lost, 15-3, on Friday to the Athletics in the semifinals of the Rookie League playoffs, ending their season. The Mesa team finished 37-19.
