6/29 Confident Maholm gets “W”

Paul Maholm won for the first time in eight starts, and the secret may have been rookie catcher Steve Clevenger. The two meshed well on Friday in the 4-0 win. It also helped that Maholm got some offense as the Cubs hit three home runs.

“He was outstanding,” Dale Sveum said of Maholm. “All of his pitches — curveball, changeup – he kept them down. I think he had as good a sink as he’s had in a while. That was about as good as you could get. I wish he would’ve kept the ball down the last inning and finish it.”

Maholm held the Astros to two hits over eight innings, then gave up a single to Brian Bixler to start the ninth, and one out later, Carlos Lee doubled. That was enough, and Maholm was lifted for Carlos Marmol, who finished for his sixth save. Clevenger hit his first Major League home run, a two-run shot in the fourth, and Luis Valbuena hit an opposite-field home run in the second to back Maholm (4-7), who earned his first victory since May 9 in what was his 200th career start.

“I wanted it,” Maholm said of the chance for a complete game. “I understand the situation. I gave up two hits. After the last outing, I’ll take what I got.”

In his last outing, he gave up seven runs on nine hits over 3 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks.

“Confidence is a huge factor, whether you’re hitting or pitching,” Maholm said. “You have to go out there confident with your game plan and keep the ball down and be aggressive. If you’re doubting your pitches, you’re doubting whatever, they won’t be as crisp. … I’ve faced [the Astros] a decent amount so I kind of know their tendencies. I go in there knowing them and am able to be confident and aggressive and keep it down.”

What was the difference?

“The rain, the delay — who knows?” Sveum said. “Some guys, just the way they feel in the bullpen, their sides, you never know. [It would've been the] confidence level they feel with the ball coming out of their hand in the bullpen. He was really good today.”

6/18 Soto activated

Geovany Soto was activated from the 15-day disabled list Monday and Welington Castillo optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Soto has been sidelined since mid May after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.

“I had a good week down there and was in plenty of games,” said Soto, who was 3-for-16 (.188) in five games with two doubles.

Soto was batting .161 when he was sidelined with the knee injury, which he felt May 16.

“I had a lot of at-bats [in Iowa] and tried to find myself and I think we’re on the right track,” Soto said.

The Cubs had talked about keeping three catchers, but decided Castillo needs regular at-bats to develop. Steve Clevenger is the backup catcher, although he started at first base on Monday.

6/17 Soto to be activated

Geovany Soto was hitless in four at-bats on Sunday with Triple-A Iowa, but the Cubs catcher most likely will be activated Monday from the disabled list. Soto, who has not played since May 17 after undersgoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair a torn meniscus, went 3-for-16 in five rehab games in the Minor Leagues. Dale Sveum said Sunday they may carry three catchers, keeping Soto, Steve Clevenger and Welington Castillo when Soto is activated.

“It’s still to be determined but it’s a possibility for a little bit that we might do that (carry three) because Clevenger is so versatile,” Sveum said of the left-handed hitter, who can play first base if needed.

6/17 Good guys

Starlin Castro and Steve Clevenger say hello to children at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Childrens Hospital of Chicago on Saturday.

6/5 Cubs may keep 3 catchers

Geovany Soto was making progress in his rehab at Triple-A Iowa, and could join the Cubs as early as Monday. Dale Sveum said they have talked about keeping three catchers on the roster in Soto, Steve Clevenger and Welington Castillo.

“Clevenger can play different positions on the field, and you’re not worried about pinch-hitting,” Sveum said. “It opens things up a little bit.”

Clevenger, who started Friday, was batting .281, while Castillo, who was activated from the disabled list Thursday, was hitting .185. Castillo will start Saturday.

“We’ll see what happens the next day,” Sveum said.

In four rehab games with Iowa, Soto was 3-for-12 with two doubles. He’s been out since May 17 after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
